Joe Cronin's rampant Red Sox, currently pacing the American league by six games, have the oesi recoru oi pulling loose ugni ones out of the fire. They have won nine of 11 for a .818 per centage, far above the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians who arc tied for second with eight of 14 and six of 10 re spectively. Washington has won six of 11 and the St. Louis Browns have been involved in 13 close ones, winning five. Surprisingly enough, the New York Yankees, who are. giving the Red Sox their stiffest competition, have grabbed but three of nine one run games. The tail end Phila delphia Athletics have had the worst luck in the close ones, losing nine of 12. Dodgers Right Behind The Cardinals' record of eight victories in 10 one-run games easily is the best in the National league with the front running Brooklyn Dodgers right behind with nine of 14. Boston's Im proved Braves, guided by the master strategist, Billy South worth, are third with five of nine followed by the Pittsburgh Pirates who have split 10 games. The Cincinnati Reds lead the second group with seven of 15 while the defending champion Chicago Cubs, involved in nine tight tussles, have won but three of nine. The Giants' one-run record of 4-8 is not much better than the lowly Philadelphia Phil lies' 2-5. Hogan was leading In points, being 25 on the plus side in the system used in this tourney that combines the best parts of match and medal play. He was leading six shots in medal play, with an even par 216 to 222 for Herman Barron and Byron Nelson, running in that order behind him in the point score with plus 14 and plus 13. He also was the onlv man to have beaten each of his six op ponents to date, and there were few experts who would risk a bet that he wouldn't finish with that slate just as clean.
