China's Political Rift Widens In Manchu City By TOM MASTERSON KAIYUAN ManehuriB, April 12 (AP) China's political rift widened perceptibly today in this communist surrounded, machine-gun protected city as Gen. Liang Hwa-sheng told corre spondents he would 'sweep way" all communists in a drive lo northern Manchuria. The arrival Tuesday of a cease fire team of American, commu nist and government members icrved only to worsen the sit uation. Liang told a press con ference he had received no in itructions regarding the cease fira team and declined to discuss its mission. He is deputy com mander of government forces in northwest China. Expressing fear for the safety of communist cease fire team members, government military authorities ordered them con- Cordon Scores Housing Bill WASHINGTON, April 12 (VP) Senator Cordon (R-Ore.) said to day he believed the housing bill passed by the senate would do "more to retard building than to expedite it." The senator, who took an ac tive part in the debates on the measure, told a reporter he sought to get the title of the bill eliminated "because it is wholly misleading and fraudulent." The bill is entitled "The Vet erans Emergency Housing Measure." And Cordon said there was nothing in it to aid veterans except to give them a 60 day preference in purchasing a new home and a 30 day prefer ence in renting one. Cordon said he voted against the measure because the senate refused to give a subsidy to vet erans. He said the $600,000,000 sub sidy to producers of building ma terials, authorized if the bill is enacted would not reach the veterans. He supported an amendment, that was defeated, to allow payments to the vet erans. He said the measure would retard building of homes be cause "it is human nature for a man to get all he can and no man will increase production when he knows that by waiting the government is going to pay him a premium. Timber Sales Drop Blamed On Weather PORTLAND, Ore., April 12 (P) Regional Forester H. J. An drews said today bad weather, "the worst since 1926 in most places in the two states," was partly to blame for a sharp de cline in the service's commercial timber sales in Oregon and Wash ington. During the first 1946 quarter the U. S. forest service sold only 84,104,000 board feet at $314, 642, he reported. The figure for the same period last year was 194,243,000 board feet for $858, 239. Another factor in the lowered sales was last fall's lumber strike, which kept many opera tors from meeting previous con tracts, he said, Not Too Appreciative fined to their quarters. The reds further vexed gov ernment officials by blowing up railroad bridges six miles souin of Kaiyuan, isolating the city more than 12 hours until the spans could be repaired. Radio Halt Ordered Liang ordered the communists to discontinue using their radio, asserting that communist activi ty in this area had increased fol lowing their arrival. Later, pre sumably acting under pressure, he also ordered government members of the cease fire team not to use their radios. Both groups, however, were permit ted to use transmitting facilities of U. S. army executive head quarters. The communists complained that their living quarters, above a restaurant, were unsatisfac tory. They were promised more suitable accommodations. (In Chungking, the commu nist New China news agency reported that Kuomintang national party members of a truce field team in Mukden re fused safe conduct guarantees to communists liaison officers seek ing to reach "the battle front" through government lines. The dispatch was dated Yenan, com munist headquarters. The agency also said that Kuomintane-insDired student ns. raders held an anti-Soviet dem onstration in Mukden Tuesday, siiuuung anu-nussian slogans Flashes Of Life Shore Leave Given 46 Chinese Seamen COOS BAY, Ore., April 12 (IP) The U. S. Immigration service has approved shore leave for 46 Chinese seamen who staged a sit-down strike on the Dutch mortorship Vanderhelst, a con sular official said today. G. Wu, secretary to the Chin ese consul in Portland, said the Chinese embassy received word of the relaxed order. Important Pointi There are many things to be considered about any shrub be fore you can find the place to which It is best suited as a part of the home planting. First, is it hardy in this climate and adapt ed to the soil at hand, will it thrive best in sun or shade, does it require a well drained dry situation or can it stand wet feet from a nigh water table? The height to which it will grow under various conditions, whether it can be allowed to keep its natural form1 and shape in the place where It is to grow; the part the shrub will best play in helping make the grounds most attractive all these are important. Even the selection of form and color in twig ana flow er, berry and feat to look their most charming against the house wall of brick or stone or painted wood. Pilot Warns P-38's Hard To Control HILLSBORO, Ore., April 12 (P)R. A. Warden warned inex perienced pilots today that it isn t easy to control a speedy P-38 if they are used to only the putt-putt kind of planes. He sat down his new army surplus Lightning here yester day on a flight from Kingman, Ariz. Previously, he had flown nothing faster than an 80-horse-power cadet for more than an hour. Warden said he would use the powerful twin-engine plane for forest and crop dusting. It cost him $1250. He has had 30U0 hours in light planes half of them as an instructor but only a short course several years ago in twin-engine operation. Former K. Sugarman Location. By MRS. W. P. MYERS Lakeshore Gardens Nursery The home beautiful was never closer to the heart of America than it is at present. For years the garden clubs and women's organizations all over the nation have been stressing the fact that it takes landscaping outside as well as the interior decorations to make a house a home. Ornamental plantings are made to beautify the surround ings in which they are placed. Attractiveness is achieved through selecting such trees and shrubs as are in harmony with each other and suited to the loca tion in which they are to grow; for as the home is called the soul of the garden, so the garden be comes the bower and appeal of the home; the lawn the canvas for the home picture. When you deciSe to landscape your home, go out and take a good look at the house and think how you would like to have it appear when completed. With your mind's eye measure the heighth and breadth of planting space, then decide whether you want tall or low-growing shrubs to predominate; for as the walls and the rug form the background of a room, so does the house and lawn determine the shrubs which fit best in your foundation plant ing. The heighth and shape of the building, size and depths of the windows, angles 'of the house to be emphasized or reduced, to gether with the shape and space of the yard are the main factors to consider in the planning of a foundation planting. Personal Taste The variety and size of shrubs to be used are largely a matter of personal taste. We like to use shrubs of a large size so that they will look grand when first planted, rather than plant small sizes and have to wait two or three years for them to grow in to the space they are to fill. The space where the shrub is to be set should determine wheth er it be tall or short or medium height as well as to need of a narrow or broad-growing type. It is in this connection that vour landscaper can be of service in helping you to select the shrubs suitable for your planting, as he is familiar with the growing hab its of the various plants and knows what size and height to expect them to make in the years aneaa. As a general rule for founda tion planting, I would say that tall growing evergreens, such as pyramidal arborvltae, blue cy press, Irish juniper and other tall-growing, narrow shrubs be placed so as to cover corners and wide spaces between windows, then fill in between and under windows with the low-growing variety and an occasional medi um tall in spaces which are suit able to produce an up-and-down effect. Most Desirable Among the most desirable low-growing evergreens are, Pfitzer, savin and tamaricus juniper, dwarf box, globe and Berkman golden arborvitae. The medium tall evergreens include box true tree which may be sheared to any desirable shape, spring Greek and vase juniper, Hovey, Warena, Bakers and com pacta arborvitae. A pleasing doorstep set up is to use a tall or medium ever green against the wall with a low dense one in front. This will stress the entrance and make it a place of welcome as it should be. After the background is set out a more handsome effect may be had by grouping lower ever greens in front so as to tie the House to the yard, the low- growing junipers, heath and rock daphne are ideal for frontage of toundation plantings. I he tamariscus juniper is must beau tiful as a ground covering around low wide steps. This juniper with creeping heather and rock daphne makes a perpetual green carpet and the bright flowers on heather or daphne are a joy in spring and early summer. Enhances Effect Some people want all the shrubs used to be low or me dium height. If the house is small or has a low-hanging roof, the lower-growing shrubs would be very correct. However with tall nouses, sharp angles and much space between windows a few tall evergreens well-placed adds much to the attractiveness of the planting. We nave mentioned only a iew oi me leading evergreens which are hardy in this climate. mere are others as well as some broadleat evergreens ' which stand our cold winters and dry summers and are lovely in the foundation planting as well as in other landscape effects.
