Newspaper Page TextTornado Has Easy Time At Tourney Medford Will Ploy Eugene Axemen In Semi-Finalt Tonight SALEM, Ore., March 15 MP) Washington nign, iuo uuisi, will battle another Portland quintet, the Central Catholic Rams, In the semi-finals of the state basketball tourney tonight, while Medford meets the Eugene Axemen. i The Washington Colonials kept on their toes last night to edge the towering Lebanon War riors, 36-34 but it wasn't easy. Another close same gave Cen tral Catholic a 42-41 win over Baker. Downstate teams coasted to easy victories: Eugene down ing Marshfield, 55-46, and the Tornado puffing out Rainier, 56-26. Lebanon grabbed a quick lead In its game with Washington, but the Colonials sprang into ac tion and were ahead 10-7 at the quarter. The Warriors bounced DaCK 10 a 14-1 rmnuiue ub Then it was Washington again, leading 27-22 at the three-way mark before Lebanon spurted to within two points. Lvnn Hamilton, sinking buck' ets from all around the floor, tallied 19 for Lebanon. His team mates held Washington's Bob Lavey, all-stater last year, to 13 points 8 in the first quarter, The Central Catholic-B a k e I clash was nip and tuck through out although the Rams had a one or two-Doint advantage most of the time. Central led 11-9 at the quarter, then the Bulldogs surged to a ia-16 nautime leaa. The Rams were ahead 34-31 at the third quarter, but Baker live points behind a few minutes before the final gun closed the gap to one point with only 15 seconds left . Fans cheered the Eugene Axe men as they maintained an am ple lead over the Marshfield Pi rates throughout their game. Medford took the lead early and never gave it up. The Tornado romped to a 13-8 quarter advan tage, 25-11 and 44-19Medford's height- at the backboards gave that, squad clearcut superiority, and Rainier was a sorry-looking clan. Forward Jerry Ross swished 19 points through the hoop, for-the winners. ., ' Medford and Eugene clash at -7:30 p. m. in the first semi-final tonight, while the two Portland clubs meet at 8:45. March 15 (IP) Pitcher Ad Liska's holdout is costing him a S100 line and a day's salary for each day's ab sence from training camp, Gen eral Manager William H. Klep- per of the Portland Baseball club announced. The sinker ball artist ranked No, 4 in the Pacific Coast league in 1945, winning 20 games and losing'12 for an average of .625. Klepper described Liska as the "top -money man", in the league and said his 1946 salary was "a boost over last year's." The manager said tne pitcher was notified he must be in con dition before his . salary would start and that failure to be in condition at the start of the sea son would mean a reduction in salary. Portland has 15 more days of training and opens the season at uakiana April z. Hertz Stables Put Count Speed Into Derby LOUISVILLE, Ky., March 15 Mrs. John D. Hertz, who has the distinction of being the only owner to start a horse in more than one running of the Ken tucky Derby without seeing her colors Beaten, is aiming at an other record for the Derby book. If her colt Count Speed proves good enough to lead the Derby field home on Saturday, May 4, it will be the first time that a brother to a previous winner ever won the Churchill Downs classic. Count Speed is a brother to Count Fleet, which won the Derby in Mrs. Hertz' colors in 1943. Both are sons of Reigh Count.-winner of the 1938 Derby for Mrs. Hertz. In addition to Count Speed, Mrs. Hertz also nominated Rich Mixture and Hired Man for the Derby. Employes at Mrs. - Hertz Stoner Creek Stud at Paris, Ky., concurred in the owner's opinion that as a yearling Count Speed was a much better looking in dividual than his brother. How ever, as a two-year-old in 1945 Count Speed failed to show the racing qualities of Count Fleet, although he did win four of his seven starts, and was third in another. Mills Defeats Riverside For Grade Title Mills school copped the grade A tourney on the KUHS court yesterday by beating Riverside 36-15. It was Mills' second win over Riverside. Barring rain or rough racing luck, his Triplicate will be a threat to take the big end ot the $50,000, mile and one-half San Juan Capistrano handicap, clos ing day feature at the golden oval. Triplicate in light at 111 pounds rates with Texas Sand man, Bail Bond and Brie A Bac, winner of the 1945 Capistrano, as the solid horses among the 16 to 20 starters, now that War Knight, surprise winner of the $100,000 handicap, won't run. Triplicate, Iive-year-old son of Reigh Count, hasn't given Astair much of a run for his money, winning only two races out of 25 in the past two years. But Astaire must have done at least a mild Mazurka last Saturday when Triplicate, closing like a runaway freight, finished six in the big 'cap, only two lengths back of the leading foursome. He will be ridden by either Job Dean Jessop, who was aboard last week, or Ted Atkin son, the track's top winner. The improving Triplicate, however, will have to be at peak form to win. Texas Sandman, top-weighted at 120, also closed fast in the hundred grander, fin ishing fifth, just ahead of Tripli cate. All either apparently needs is the extra quarter-mile .of to morrow s race. . Neither boy fought last night. Two brothers, Lorentine and Ralph Weiser, of the Chcmawa Indian school, will slug it out to night for the 135-pound division title. Moss wanted to stop tho fight but Joe said no. As the third round opened Martino grabbed the wounded wing again and that was all. More than 100 boys answered Coach Ed Ryan's first call for ban-ball player nnd tryouts will get under way as soon as the weather permits.
