BM. 1 The first itage of construction on the long-dlscuised navy sewage disposal plant got underway at Shasta way and Owens last week. The plant will accommodate the federal housing units as well as part of the city In that area. Work Starts On Government Sewage Disposal Plant In Klamath Falls Area After more than a year of ne gotiating, work on the govern ment sewage disposal plant on Shasta way and Owens began lust week, If mntcrluls arc readily avail able, tho work will be completed in four to six months, according to C. A. Dunn, contractor. E. A. Thomas, city engineer, explained mat since ine oracr lor sicci ma terials was placed before tho steel strike brought production to a standstill, there Is a chance that the order has been complet ed and will be delivered on schedule. Originally, tho need for the plant cumc about because of the six government housing units constructed in Klamath Falls. The government requested per mission to hook up to the city sewage disposal system, but be cause that system wos already overtaxed, the request was re fused. The government housing agen cy recommended that the city make on application to the feder al housing authority for means of constructing the plant ' Which would serve tno six housing projects and the section- of the city in that area. The city agrees to pay 10 per cent of the total cost if tho application is accept ed. The detailed plans, - made by tho city, were submitted to the federal housing authority, but by the time the plans were ap proved, the war had ended and, according to the agreement, the government fund would be fur nished through the Lanham act, which wa canceled at the war' end. The cancellation of funds left the city without government help to undertake the Job. For some time nothing was done until tho novy Intervened, because housing was badly need ed by military personnel. The navy drafted plans and agreed to appropriate fund to build the sewer plant. The total cost of the project will be ap proximately 10 per cent over the amount allotted to it by the navy, and the city will make up the balance very much like the .nnlll Inn.
