Magnuson Urges II. S. To Seek Island Bases From England As Part Of Loan 6 ti P cl I Br ALEX H. SINGLETON WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 (P) lenator Magnuson (D-Wash.) lalled today for acquisition of jome British-owned island bases h connection with any loan to England, thus spreading to both ceans current discussions of future American outposts. Maenuson's comment to a re porter came in the wake of Presi dent Truman's declaration that Ihis country Intends to retain ex- Elusive control over any former Japanese Islands it neeas lor security In the Pacific. The chief executive told his news conference yesterday that other JaDanese owned or man dated islands will be placed un der United Nations trusteeship. He added that no decision has been reached on just what bases this country wants to keep by Itself under exclusive trustee- thin. Mr. Truman's words backed up arguments of American military and naval officials who long have urged permanent develop ment of a chain of island bases from the Aleutians in the north to Manus in the south. Virtual Directive The president's assertion also amounted to a virtual directive to the American delegation to the United Nations assembly in London. Magnuson, however, said this country should go even further now toward getting the bases it needs both in the Atlantic and the Pacific and whether they belong to enemy or ally. "I don't know why. under the loan, these bases can't be thrown in as pan oi the consideration, he said. . "I wouldn't suggest it if It in volved an economic loss for Britain. Mr. Tru man told the newsmen he plans to send congress a special mes , sage on the British loan shortly after his message next Monday combining budget requirements with his views on the state of the union. Meanwhile, It appeared pos sible the American plan for ex clusive retention of the islands it needs might stir a controversy t London over whether it con stitutes another big-power cut back of UNO s ultimate author ity. Mr. Truman said UNO would be asked for authority to retain individual control. .But it was left unclear what this, country's position would be in the event the request was rejected. Also elected were Merlin Bleak of Swift and company, to the post of vice chairman of the committee, and Just Trip pett of Commercial Mainte nance, who will serve another year on the Scout district com mission. Patterson has served many years in Boy Scout work. He has been troop committeeman for troop 1 of St. Paul's Episco pal church and for the past year has been organization chairman for the local district. Before coming to Klamath Falls he was active in Scouting in Great Falls, Mont. He succeeds Paul Skeen as chairman. The new officials were elect ed to their posts by a group of 37 committeemen.
