news conference yesterday that

He added that no decision has
been reached on just what bases
this country wants to keep by

Mr. Truman's words backed up
arguments of American military
and naval officials who long
have urged permanent develop
ment of a chain of island bases
from the Aleutians in the north
to Manus in the south.
Virtual Directive
The president's assertion also
amounted to a virtual directive
to the American delegation to
the United Nations assembly in
London.
Magnuson, however, said this
country should go even further
now toward getting the bases it
needs both in the Atlantic and
the Pacific and whether they
belong to enemy or ally.
A lieutenant commander in
the naval reserve, Magnuson be
fore becoming a senator was
chairman of the house naval sub
committee which conducted

and state department officials on
this county's island defense
needs.
Now a member of the senate
naval committee, he said the
question of acquiring British
bases "essential to our defenses
either on a permanent or long-
term lease basis should be
raised before the . proposed
$3,750,000,000 loan to Britain is
approved.
"I don't know why. under the
loan, these bases can't be thrown
in as pan oi the consideration,
he said.
. "I wouldn't suggest it if It in
volved an economic loss for
Britain. But most of them are
located on - otherwise barren
Islands and are of no commercial
or military value to Britain or
the empire." -
Magnuson may have an . op
portunity to present his agree

within a few weeks. Mr. Tru
man told the newsmen he plans
to send congress a special mes
, sage on the British loan shortly
after his message next Monday

James Patterson, manager of
the Northern Life Insurance
company, was elected chairman
of the Klamath basin district
Boy Scout committee at the an
nual meeting ot scout neacis at
the chamber of commerce last
week.
Also elected were Merlin
Bleak of Swift and company,
to the post of vice chairman of
the committee, and Just Trip
pett of Commercial Mainte
nance, who will serve another
year on the Scout district com
mission.
Patterson has served many
years in Boy Scout work. He
has been troop committeeman
for troop 1 of St. Paul's Episco
pal church and for the past
year has been organization
chairman for the local district.
Before coming to Klamath Falls
he was active in Scouting in
Great Falls, Mont. He succeeds
Paul Skeen as chairman.
The new officials were elect
ed to their posts by a group of
37 committeemen. Alter tne
election and business meeting,
training films on Scout subjects
were shown by Bill Kunz of
Swift and company.
