Deo. 21 A mother and her five children were burned to death and three other persons were injured when fire destroyed the- Interior of a two-story house In central Winnipeg early today. The dead: Mrs. Betty Arml tage; her sons, Jerry, 7, Jimmy. 3; and three daughters, Shirley, 16, Elaine, 13, and Yvonne, six months. Injured are Bernard Arml tage, 58, husband of the dead woman, another daughter, Son ya, 8, and Reginald Benham, 42. The fire started at about 3 a. m., and firemen battled the flaiVics that swept through the wooden building In 15-below-zcro weather. Benham saved young Sonya when he climbed a ladder to an upstairs bedroom window through which the child was trying to scramble. Cascade CASCADE SUMMIT, Ore., December 20 The mercury fell to 10 above here Wednesday morning. There are about '60 inches of snow on the ground. Hoge Clarke of Oakridge is here with his caterpillar tractor with which he clears the South ern Pacific right-of-way. The weather here has been unusually severe this fall. Mrs. L. L. Hall and son Gor don, returned from Portland where they have been visiting Mrs. nans sister, Mrs. joe Walker, and her two aunts. Mrs. Annette Hopps returned from a trip through the middle west. Mrs. Leo Richards is visiting at the R. L. Porter home. Word has been received from T5 Roland L. Porter that he Is now stationed in Germany where he is helping erect a ra dio tower. He is there only tem porarily and will later return to Paris. A. C. Nagel who runs a trap line here has caught several mar tens this winter. He reports that because martens are caught dll fcrently than foxes, the foxes will not enter the trap, although they will investigate to find whether or not the traps have food. He sees tracks of foxes around the traps. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Currier. former Cascade Summit resi dents, are now living in North Bend. Until recently they lived in Troutdale and Currier was working in the aluminum plant at Fairview. George Irwin of Springfield has moved to Abernethy where he has taken over the duties as section foreman. Mrs. Irwin and the children will remain in their home in Springfield. The Irwins several years ago lived at Cru zatte. . w" Two Crippled Ships Reported Off Coast SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 21 (P) Two crippled ships were reported py coast guard neaa quarters off the California coast today, one of them under tow by a coast guard cutter. . The army transport Imperial which left here yesterday bound for Seattle, was reported with out power oil Cape Mendocino and being towed to San Fran cisco by the cutter. Shawnee The coast guard said she was not m danger. She carried army troops.
