Marshall to morrow amid speculation ' the special American envoy would meet Generalissimo Chiang Kai shek at Nanking, x The American general, . 'on whom China pins hones for an early end to fratrldal strife, will fly to Nanking Friday, it was learned reliably. .- , The World Dally News'1 in Chungking said Marshall would meet Chiang at Nanking, for the first time, and accompany him to Chungking. - Chiang returned in triumph late yesterday to Nanking, the prewar capital from which he and his government were driv en by the Japanese in 1937. Accompanied by Madame Chiang, he flew there m a Chinese-manned C-47 from Pelp lng, where he told correspond ents he was glad President Tru man "reaffirmed the original United States policy toward China. Dec. 19 () The senate and house today ap proved a compromise GI bill of rights and sent it to the White House. The house, acting first, adopt ed it on a standing vote of 134 to 23. The senate shouted Us approval, without objection, on a voice vote. The bill revises and simplifies many of the provisions of the original GI bill of rights enacted in 1944. The changes , deal primarily with education and loan provi sions and removes a requirement of uie original law mat tuition fees and unemployment allow ances of the GI bill be deducted from any future bonus congress may vote for veterans. Dec. 19 (ft K tlonalization of the 250-year-old Bank of England won final ap proval in commons tonight, 306 to 126. and the measure was sent to the house of lords. Described by labor party members as "a great charter of freedom for the English peo ple," the bill transfers the his toric financial institution to public ownership, with adminis tration by a governor, deputy governor and court of 10 direc tors appointed by the king. The capital of the private bank was $58,212,000. It has paid 12 per cent dividends an nually since 1023. Shareholders will be compensated with gov ernment stocks Bearing a per cent interest. Small Town Urged For Site Of UNO LONDON, Dec. 19 (P) Great Britain urged the United Nations preparatory commissions today to consider a small town "in the east of the United States" as the permanent home of the United Nations organization. The British delegation pre sented the commission an offi cial document listing considera tions which it said should be taken into account in picking the site. . A member of the British dele gation said the recommendation could be Interpreted as favoring a town "not too close to Wash ington." 62 Reefer Cars Arrive At Tulelake The Tulelake area received 62 refrigerator cars, and 15 were spotted nearer Klamath Falls yesterday as the long-awaited In crease of reefers arrived to break a threatened bottleneck in Klamath basin potato shipments. Southern Pacific officials said today that potato growers could expect a steady flow from now on. House Approves Palestine Policy WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (fl" The house joined the senate to day In favoring free entry of Jews Into Palestine. The house agreed to a senate passed resolution calllnK on the government to "use. its good offices" with Great Britain for opening Palestine fully to Jew ish people. The bill does not require the president's signature. It is merely an expression of coil' gressional views. The house approved the reso lution Dy voice vote, after tho chamber had defeated by a 133 to 36 standing vote a motion to send it back to the foreign af fairs committee. Elderly Man Burned . To Death In Blaze MOUNT VERNON, Dec. 19 W) An elderly man was burned to death and a volunteer fireman was injured seriously when fire destroyed a half block of busi ness buildings early today. James Barton, 72, a bachelor, died in the flames when he broke away from firemen and ran back into his second floor room In one of the burning buildings in an attempt to recover his cloth ing. Gerald Nelson, a fireman, was badly burned in an explosion in one of the structures. The fire, starting In the base ment of the Rood Implement company building, spread rapid ly through adjoining structures. Congressional Socks ; Hang la.
