Reports indicate that the condition is gen eral throughout the country. We know it exists in Klamath Falls, and probably every reader of this column can cite an example from ' personal knowledge. For instance, we have a friend who is just out of the army and has a job which has brought him to Klamath . Falls with his wife and small ' child. He has been engaged in a desperate house-hunting pro ject. ' His little family, has accompanied him to several of the so-called "jammed cities" in the country in his period in the service, but he swears the situation is worse here than any place he has been. He mentions particularly the run-down shanty type of quarters that seem to he considers outrageous prices. He also has run he consides outageous pices. And let the peace of God rule In your hearts, to which also ye are called In one body, and be ye thankful. - The World Today By DeWtTT MacKENZIE Associated Press World Traveler PNUBLIN, Dec. 15 Sean O'Kelly, president of J the republic of Eire, is as Irish as sham rock, and an altogether delightful gentleman who is one of the foundation rocks upon which this new state is built. O'Kelly and I have been friends for 27 years and it was good to see him again. You would hardly suspect such a quiet, scholarly man, whose face habitually wears a friendly smile, has a Jack-the-Giant-Killer record. But he has, for he was one of those who fought the British in Dublin during the "bloody Easter week re bellion" of . 1916. and was imprisoned so many times for defiance to England that he likely would have trouble remembering all the cells he occupied. The first time I met Sean O'Kelly was dur ing the peace conference in Paris after the last war. He was just a young fellow then and his business was to try to catch the attention of the powers and interest them in applying the Wilsonian ideal of self-determination to Ireland. He was having a tough time when I arrived on the scene and gave him an idea not I must admit, without selfish motives. . . Mysterious Escape emergencies such as fire and flood. In- these cases, however, the local government must foot the v cost of moving units, .and they say that half the 25,000 family' units' available must be moved to accommodate war veterans in places where they work or attend school. The gov ernment also stipulates" the" housing must be destroyed when the . veteran need ceases. These comments inevitably bring to mind the various public housing projects which exist in Klamath Falls. These were built to meet made a sensational and mysterious escape from Lincoln prison in England, and newsmen of many countries had been trying to get the details. . O'Kelly had ' the story but had de clined to publish it because he thought the same method might be used again for the ' rescue of other imprisoned Sinn Feiners. From the im pression a key was made and the day of de livery was set. a Played Siren Role A T this juncture there, appeared on the scene two beautiful Irish girls both college women from Dublin who played a siren role to British sentries at the gate. At the ap pointed hour the rescue was made while De Valera and his mates were in the yard. The girls drew the sentries away. The relief party rushed up and unlocked the gate with the key 'made from the impression. De Valera and his pals raced out and were distributed in several ' fast automobiles which sped away In different directions, thus confusing pursuers. . So that's the story of De Valera's escape. There are other versions, but I like this one especially the touch about the singing gardener and the beautiful girls. Of course, that's water over the dam, but it represents the stuff of which the present government of Eire is built. understanding they would be removed within two years after the end of the war unless a local government agency" asked that they be retained. , V. .' Military personnel are 'still making full use of the military housing units,' and the regulations under which the others are rented do not as yet offer much relief to the need for housing for veterans. s " .. It is not known now how long the military housing units which are reasonably high-type ' apartments will be - needed for military use, but it is certain that it would be foolish to talk of dismantling those units, as long as there exists a serious housing shortage for 'veterans ; In Klamath Falls. We do not believe? any local group would want this done. Also, it would seem inconsistent to remove these relatively hih-type units while marginal '. shack-type construction is permitted to stand. Perhaps some program could be worked out. that would make it possible to let the military. housing units stand and destroy an equivalent ' number of shacks. .. , .-..)
