Happy Chandler of Kentucky, baseball's now high com missioner, would resign from the senate November 1, Ostensibly tn devote his full time to the job of running . , . , major league baseball. And right now Chandler is faced with the first really big controversial hunk of meat he's been called to bite into since taking over Kenesaw Mountain Landis' old job the color problem In big-time ball. Branch Rick? Jr.. who teemi to be fol lowing his old man's example in keeping the baseball commisiionor up nights, has bought Jackie Roblson from the Kansas City negro Monarchs and plans to use the former UCLA grldster In the Infield of the Montreal Royals. Ferrari's Buck Leads Sweepstakes A 287-pound four-point buck bagged by Frank Ferrari of Klamath' Falls on Horsefly mountain now tops this seasons entries in Ed Bell's annual mule deer sweepstakes Ferrari made hta klU with a .300 Savage. Another heavy buck entered recent y was brought down by Lewis Payne, also on Horsefly mountain and also with a .300 Savage. Payne's buck weighed 271. There have been a number of reports drifting in that the deer are on the move now, with cold weather coming to the mountains, but conditions this weekend should make for good hunting at the end of the season. The large number of hunters expected to take to the woods for their last crack at a buck will keep the deer stirred up and be a big help to shooters. Recently a Washington news release announced that the navy was going to release some 40,000,000 rounds of ammunition, much to the gratification of a lot of local nimrods who have been scouring the town for shells. j Well, the shells came but they were all skeet loads, sum ber eight shot with three drams of powder, and hardly suit able for hunting migratory waterfowl. Dealers and sportsmen alike have turned thumbs down and are again looking ex pectantly toward the navy. Pelicans Up Against Another Tough One Fans who saw Medford play Eureka a couple of weeks ago say that the Klamath boys are up against another classy outfit. One local said the Logger eleven was the slickest, cleverest, best coached small squad he's seen in a long time, and the 38-0 score was no indication of the battle they gave the Tornado. Versatility Is their strong point, plays being pulled from the T, single wing, double wing and box formations.
