Coggeshall, ing conversation ran some thing like this: Cog Hello. ME Hello, there. Have you won any honors recently? Cog Well, there's some ven ison in my ice box. ME Swell, anything else" Cog Haven't had time for much bird-hunting, but when I do, I win the honors. ME Swell, anything else? Cog Nope, same old grind. What are you driving at, any- ME There's a story on the wire here about you. Got any idea what it's about? . Cog Are you asking or giving information? If you've got something, let's hear it. I've never been enthusiastic about the indirect ap proach. Mi: Guess you didn't know you had won the Gorgas award for distinguished service to our military forces. S Cog Well, I'll be . . . We recite the dialog to indicate the old shoe unaffectedness of the man who has just won another outstanding national honor in his chosen field. We of Klamath Falls are proud of Dr. Coggeshall, proud of the Marine Bar racks, and proud of the outstanding work that has won national and international attention. It is a pleasure to state that Dr. Coggeshall is more than Just a military officer stationed here he is a citizen of this community. In some papers, the Washington story of the Gorgas award stated that a part of Dr. Cogge shall's work had been overcoming psychic dis turbances among service men. He said today that he objects strenuously to that interpreta tion of the work done here. Men suffering from malaria and filariasis were worried and concerned, and naturally so, when they came to the Marine Barracks, but the captain does . not regard that as a "psychic disturbance." e As Others See It EDITOR JEWETT of the Lakeview Examiner gives an account of a recent trip to Crater lake in his weekly .column, and includes the following paragraph 'of special interest here:'''1''' . "Stopped for a couple of hours at the Klam... ath Falls city park and zoo. No doubt due to " a help shortage, the zoo looked run down. Deer looked a little thin, but there didn't ap pear to be an abundance of food available. Only a few of the enclosures for animals and . birds were tagged, so we had to guess what some of them were, and not having a very high I. Q., the results of our pronouncements would probably have shocked a veteran outdoorsman. We were also interested in that old stage coach, . and would have liked to know more about it, but there was no information concerning it.. Just a wooden plaque might have told the whole story. It's too bad they have a nice park and a sizeable collection of wild life." . Here's a suggestion worth a follow-up. Even with the growth of some feeling of moral responsibility after World War I, little had been done to raise the nositinn of the various Malayan peoples. When the new war brnkp. thp British and French found the situation disastrous. While we had little evidence one way or anuiuer irom java ai ine time, it is reasonable to assume that Indonesian leaders there, having formed a considerable under ground liberation movement long before the war, were not too sorry, in the beginning, to see the Japanese oust their Dnth masters. Oct. 17. 1945 as In motors and steel and talking about getting a new labor board. Frankly no one here thinks this will do the job. You cannot patch up a flood. Unless the government takes hold of the fundamentals and solves them there will be strikes from now on. The fundamentals behind tha situation have been obscured from the public eye by the chaos of propaganda. The union campaign has passed from the economic into the political stngo. Their wartime campaigns were plotted on economic grounds. They massed figures to claim prices had advanced more than wages and therefore demanded wage increases to the same extent prices had advanced, They have switched their strategy away from that ground entirely. Now they want a 30 per cent wage increase not claiming prices have advanced but on the new ground that they want to maintain national purchasing power. a e a e Same Symptoms THE same symptoms are evident in the posi tion of John Lewis, In coal first he got his wage increases on price grounds then developed Something new called portal-to-portal to claim additional increases which could not be justi fied on price grounds and now is fomenting for foremen in whom he was never before interested. Thus labor has dropped the appeal to the public for justice the popular appeal which made the unions what they are today. It no longer takes the public into its confidence by announcing what it wants in many instances. In other cases, it assumes an unequivocal pub-lic-be-damned policy (New York elevator strike). A patchwork handling of this condition can only lead to greater success for the unions along their present line. There must always necessar ily be more and more strikes; more and more wage Increases for any reasons; higher and higher prices. The situation thus will never get settled. On this current line it can never be stabilized. Mr. Truman no doubt thinks he is playing as good politics as Mr. Roosevelt did with the same methods, but I do not think so. Mr. Roosevelt could get away with it economically because the situation was only starting then. Now it has reached a zenith which means the unions have more control, over economic policy of the nation than government. They can force the country into inflation against Mr. Truman's own policy. To deliver his con trols to the pressures of union political action can have but one result defeat of his economic policies and therefore of himself. If the unions continue without responsibility to the-nation their own causes they must in inflation to its upper limits and economic collapse and finally into either the Russian, German or not probably, of the proposed Inflation means bankruptcy and the world knows no answer to that except arbitrary dictatorship. . Such events would hardly bring Mr. Truman any political success or the unions in the long run, as the army would no doubt operate' our All AN economic pqlicy for the good of the people as a whole must be established be yond reach of the unions. A basis of justice be established in place of the Roosevelt policy, of justice for the unions more else. cannot assume a national re Their very position as a minority class group prevents them from genuinely as suming a character based on national Interest, be made responsible to the public, the government and their own mem' bership by laws placing them on a just footing with other class groups such as farmers and non-union workers by requiring them to in corporate or otherwise making them responsible before the law and the public. To force them to incorporate would make them pay taxes to support the country as others do; cause them to assume a genuine financial responsibility so their members can see where their hard-earned money goes. They could sue Then the public, through the government, would have some hold on them. Their strikes be justified and their appeals rather than to runaway pressure. They could deal with business on an equal only way I can find in logic or to prevent inevitable inflation, pendence may prove extremely difficult in their present state of mind. All of which is a long way of saying that the stories coming out of Java today cannot be read as applying to an isolated situation. We have the word of Gen. Carlos P. Romulo, resident commissioner oi the Philippines to the United States, writing in Collier's, that: "Essentially the problem of tne racmc represents the race problem of the world. Ignore it, sidestep it, neglect it, and the next war will be a race war." County Treasurer Returns From Guam Set. Chester I..
