Nurses Aide Course To Begin August1 1 As nurses nicies arc still need ed in hospital work, a volunteer nurses aide training course will be given at tho local Red Cross headquarters three days a week from 1 to 5 p. m. This course, starting August 1, will bo taught by Mrs. John Hawkins. There will bo 35 hours of classroom work nnd 45 hours of hospital practice. The aides will assist and bo under the direct super vision of registered nurses. To qualify for this the Appli cant must be from 18 to 30 earn of age, a citizen of the United States, a high school' gradunto or its equivalent, and be ablo to give 150 hours of volunteer service a year. Cnr tain Mahoney has been In the states for several months, but expects to return soon to the Pacific. He Is the son of former Mayor and Mrs. Willis Mahoney, and while here visited with Brady Narcy and R. C. Wood ruff. Motorists Pay 18 Parking Tickets Eighteen more parking tickets were paid yesterday by Klamath Falls motorists for violation of the one-hour parking limit in the business district. C. A. This led to belief the con ference might have progressed to the finul decision stage. Western Defense Has Say On Japs SAN FRANCISCO. July 31 (IP) The ormy reitcruted today that its western defense com mand has the sole responsibility of determining which persons of Japanese ancestry may or may not be permitted to return to Pacific coast states. All were excluded from the west, for security reasons, at the start of the war. Major Gen. H. C. Pratt, head of tho western defense com mand, issued a statement to clarify this jurisdiction because, he said, of an apparent "erron eous impression" some of the public has received. He empha sized that the wha has no authority in the matter. Received Figures Revised figures on last Sat urday's allied carrier sweep over tho Inland sea and the huge Kure naval base listed 147 vessels and 202 aircraft wrecked, including two aircraft carriers damaged and a cruiser sunk which had not been previously listed. Twenty more ships and sur face craft, destroyed or damaged during the same period over a wide area were reported by Gen eral MacArthur. These included an aircraft carrier hit at Kure Sunday. Lx tensive damage to factories, Including a power works, and other ground installations was reported. Additionally an types of air sweeps over Japan, China and Indo-China knocked out 72 enemy locomotives at least tem porarily. Suicide Tactics All Japanese over 14 In oc cupied China were reported un dergoing hurried but realistic military training "in which fire belches forth and blood is drawn" in preparation for "the enemy's coastal landing plan." The Japanese expect this blow to fall north of Shanghai. Tho civilian volunteer corps in the homeland was told by Home Minister Genki Abe to use suicide tactics to meet in vading forces. One task of the corps Is to increase Nippon's food supply. Washington authorities said Japan is very short of food but is not facing starvation. Field dispatches told of well fed Japanese troops bitterly re sisting allied mop up forces in the Solomons and Philippines. The Nipponese garrison on Bougainville island in the Solo mons was reported reinforced by garrisons from the Shortland islands. NEWSMAN RETIRES WASHINGTON, July 31 (P) Klrke L. Simpson, veteran of 32 years on the Washington staff of the Associated Press, is retir ing on a pension. Simpson, who will be 64 August 14, joined the AP in San Francisco in 1908 and came to Washington in 1913. City Firemen Burn Weeds City firemen have started burning off vacant lots and weed patches this week, starting in tho Shippington area Monday and burning near Riverside school Tuesday morning. County fire equipment was called out on another small grass fire in the Llndley Heights area Monday afternoon which did no property damage.
