SFCAPPROVES PEB TAX REFUNDS WASHINGTON, July 12 (VP) The senuto finance commltteo to day approved legislation to caso tho excess profits tux and speed up tux refunds to corporations. Tho measure, already passed by tho house, is designed to im prove tho cash position of cor porations by ubout $3,500,000, 000 to speed reconversion. Chairman Oeorgo (D-Gu.) sold thut wlille tho bill in generul was approved there would have to bo a poll of absent members on tho quostlon of retaining ono provision. Earlier, Oolln F. Stamm, chief of tho Joint commltteo on taxa tion, told tho committee that speed Is essential If tho measure is to hnvo tho desired effect of facilitating reconversion, "Buslncssmon aro now plan ning for reconversion and read justment to pcucctlmo opera tions," ho sulci. "Tho Immedl ute enactment of this bill would facilitate, this planning." The' measure, passed by the house lust week, would: 1. Increnso tho excess-profits exemption from 10,000 to $25, 000 effcctlvo with the 1040 tax year. 2. Allow corporations to take currently tho postwar credit of 10 per cent of tho excess profile tax. 3. Advance to January 1, 1046, tho maturity date of outstanding post-war refund bonds. 4. Provide for snccd-up of re funds duo as a result of previous operating losses or unused excess-profits credits. Answering a question from Chairman George (D-Ga.), Stamm estimated the change In the excess profits tax would re sult In a not loss to the govern ment of about $100,000,000.
