Champs Find Going Tough In National Brooklyn Southpaws Catch St. Louis Twice; Giant Win Streak Forecasts Trouble By JACJK HAND Aiioclstsd Preii Sports Writer St. Louis was hiding the go ing tough Jn tho National league's eastern half today as the suspicion grew that- serious trouble was ahead for the world champions. Not that two successive am bushes by Brooklyn southpaws were going to give Skipper Billy Southworth sleepless nights. Marty Marlon was still out ot the lineup and the outfield was a putchwork proposition due to the Injury to Red Schocndicnst. However, six straight victories by tho New York Gionts, two against weilorn opposition, could be a real storm signal and tho Brooks' six-game string Couldn't be ignored. The Cards murdered the Dod gers 18 out of 22 games last year and romped over the Giants 16-0, but it was a safe bet there would bo no repeat performance this summer. Brooklyn's hot streak was the talk of the majors because the "experts" had labeled the Bums cellar bait and even Branch Rickey and Leo Durocher must be amazed, Durocher had the nerve to start Tom Scats, a 25-game win ner at San Francisco but a fail ure in two Dodger appearances and it paid off with interest. The 32-ycar-old lefthander had been belled out by the Giants and Phils but he shut out the Cardi nals, 7-0, on seven hits for his first triumph,' It might be a new trend, for Durocher also copped with rookie southpaw Vic Lom bard! in the other game of the scries. Third Sackor Bill Hart hit his first major league home run off loser Ted Wilks, a three-time vic tor over the Brooks in '44, and Second Baseman Eddie Slanky finally made an error after handling 90 chances flawlessly. Johnny Ruckcr's 18-game hit streak was snapped by Frank Dasso of Cincinnati but Phil Weintraub clouted one into the upper stands with two on in the eighth for the Giants' 4-3 mar gin. Although Van (The New) Mun go failed to last for the fourth straight time. Ace Adam saved him a second decision. Wcin traub's clout tied him with Mel Ott and Ernie Lombard! for the league lead with five. Joe McCarthy shook up his batting order in Detroit, insert ing Tuck Stainback In Russ Der ry s right field post, and watched his New York Yankees even the series with Detroit, 7-3. Hank Borowy notched his fifth victory over Hal Newhouser who topped mo iuiiK3 six limes a year ago. Stainback celebrated his return to tne lineup with his first cir cuit clout in four years. Originally Promoter Mack LUIard had carded Wagner and Sneeze Achiu, the Chinese sleeper artist, for the main event, but the grudge fight in the dressing room during the opener gave Lillard the oppor tunity to stage a rcol blood and thunder event in the ring. Morelll took tho first fall after pounding Wagner blindly around the ring before the bell sounded and then falling on him In a moment of weakness for the thrcc-counl. George came back in the second round to batter Morelll into insensibil ity and claim the fall with a body press, much to the delight of the ladies. During the rest period, Wag ner, not satisfied with Just get ting the fall, picked up the stool in Morclli's corner and started an advance toward Mor elll with murder in his mind. Referee Wally Moss interceded and finally succeeded in wrest ing the weapon from Gorgeous George and put the proceedings back on an even keel. In the final stanza, George reopened the fresh cut above Morclli's eye and hammered him into a bloody coma for the fall. Morelll was not satisfied with just being kayocd, but wanted to continue the row after the match was over. Wag ner gave quite a demonstration of willingness to cooperate in murder, but finally the ref cleared the ring. Witnesses said the battle continued in the dressing room'. The middle bout was a clean affair with Paavo Katonen and Sneeze Achiu splitting the falls to make a draw. Achiu's pres sure pointing holds irritated Ka tonen, but both wrestlers kept the match on a high plane.
