Quite an Athlete Although Chandler never got beyond minor league baseball competition he was quite an ath lete in his younger years. He was an all-Kentucky basketball player at Transylvania and a star quarterback in football. Lu ter he coached undefeated bas ketball teams at Versailles, Ky., Wgh school and llassie, a private Turning to politics In 1929, Chandler progressed from state senator, to lieutenant governor of Kentucky, to governor and then Unitea States senator. His present term would have expired U 1949. He is married and has four children and one grandchild. Appointment Announced -' Appointment of Chandler was ' announced by the club represen-, tatlves after an executive session which lasted approximately four hours. -' - ,. . Frank J. -Lausche of Ohio, Chairman Robert Hannegan of the democratic national com mittee, and former Postmaster General James A. Farley. Congratulated Shortly after the 16 owners agreed -unanimously on Chan dler, they telephoned him and each congratulated the jovial, 46-year-old law-maker. During the conversations, some of the owners told Chandler that what really put him in the chair left vacant by Landis' death was the conviction that "of all the-men considered for the job, we felt sure you loved baseball- best." "There's ho doubt about my love for the game," Chandler said. "I've loved it all my life, and this job is the one I've want ed above all others."
