Portland, Ore, made a daring nighttime run in an amphibian tractor here on D-night to carry urgently needed ammunition to the front lines despite a deadly nan oi Japanese mortar fire. Guided by only the white un dershirt of a marine officer who strode ahead of the tractor, he chugged without lights through a mine field. He not onlv took tho supplies to the beach, but made it 170 yards inland to wltliln 10 yards of the front While Ramus was unloading tho supplies, his tractor was straddled by a heavy burst of mortar fire. Two crew members who were outside unloadinc am munition now arc listed as miss ing. The Oregon corporal had only uurstmg star sliells to guide liim on the way out. Macon said the meeting's object is to offer "an unprejudiced presentation of 'the American way' of deal ing with the problem." S. coast guard hereafter, until further notice, will . be placed on inactive duty for an indefinite period of weeks fol lowing enlistment, reports .Re cruiter O. L. Puckctt, Portland. Previous to March 1, recruits were sent to training stations on the day of enlistment, but the new procedure permits them to continue their schooling or work for several additional weeks be fore departing. For example, it Is expected mat an 17-year-olds enlisted in March will remain on -inactive status until late April, Puckett said. . Applicants' must be 17 years of age, have at least one year ot nign scnooi, nave parents consent, pass a physical exam ination, bo American citizens and must furnish legal proof oi pirin date and place.
