Portland, Ore, made a daring
nighttime run in an amphibian
tractor here on D-night to carry
urgently needed ammunition to
the front lines despite a deadly
nan oi Japanese mortar fire.
Guided by only the white un
dershirt of a marine officer who
strode ahead of the tractor, he
chugged without lights through
a mine field. He not onlv took
tho supplies to the beach, but
made it 170 yards inland to
wltliln 10 yards of the front
While Ramus was unloading
tho supplies, his tractor was
straddled by a heavy burst of
mortar fire. Two crew members
who were outside unloadinc am
munition now arc listed as miss
ing.
The Oregon corporal had only

Young men of 17 enlisting in
the U. S. coast guard hereafter,
until further notice, will . be
placed on inactive duty for an
indefinite period of weeks fol
lowing enlistment, reports .Re

Previous to March 1, recruits
were sent to training stations on
the day of enlistment, but the
new procedure permits them to
continue their schooling or work
for several additional weeks be
fore departing.
For example, it Is expected

Applicants' must be 17 years
of age, have at least one year

The training, however, and the
setting up of this service will not
be available in all parts of the
state immediately, according' to
Stoll:

area. Such a service will be 'pre
ceded by working arrangement
with government and' private
agencies and organizations which
are interested in the occupation
al adjustment of - its -citizens.
This, it has been decided, will se
cure the best coordination possi

last night at Scottsburg, presum
ably in a. case ot murder and sui
cide, Coroner H, C. Stearns re

. Martin, the coroner : said., ar
rived Monday from his home at
Mapleton ..to visit his wife,, who
had been receiving medical care
at tne home of ner son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and . Mrs: Wayne
Kay lor, at Scottsburg. Investiga
tion indicated, the coroner said,
that. Martin endeavored to per
suade his wife to return to Ma
pleton with him' and that when
she refused to leave Scottsburg,
ho shot her through the head,
then turned the gun on himself,
Inflicting ,a fatal wound.- They
were the parents of seven daugh
ters and four sons; '.
