But for apples that are better when cooked, here are appetizing suggestions. GLAZED BAKED APPLES (These are the kind you get in fine restaurants- but there's nothing complicated about preparing them): Wash 6 large baking apples, remove blos som ends, and core about 2 inches deep. Fill each cavity with 1 or 2 tbsps. sugar, dash of cinnamon and nutmeg. Place in baking dish, with small amount of. water. Bake in moderate oven' (375 F.) about 45 minutes. Make syrup of 1 cup sugar and I cup water; boil 5 minutes. Remove cover for last 15 minutes of baking, and baste frequently with syrup. Serve warm or cold, with cream or chilled custard sauce. And if you like apple sauce in full, crystal-clear pieces, then try this recipe for CATSUP APPLES Core, but ao not peel cooking apples. Cut in half crosswise, and place in baking dish, cut side up. . Top each half with $ tbsp. catsup and H tbsp. butter or margarine. Add enough water to cover the bottom of the dish. Bake in moderate oven (350 F.) for about 30 minutes.
