This is tne US-mile section Deuvcen Portola and Spring Garden. At the present rate of progress, the operation will be extended early in juiv to include tne io mues between Spring Garden and Kcd- die. When completed, the central lzed traffic control system, in stallation of which was begun last October, will embrace liv miles of line between Portola, at the upper end of the Feather River canyon, and Oroville, west ern gateway to tne canyon, inc total cost of the project, which will be one of the longest oper ations of its type in tne united States, will be approximately 1,300,000. It is expected that the project will' be completed the latter part ot mis year. Under the new signal system (called the CTC), movements of all trains In the district will be directed by a dispatcher from a central tower, strategically lo cated at Keddle, 76 miles east of Oroville. Trains will be di rected only by signal indication, without train orders, and all passing track switches on the entire district will be electrical ly ooened and closed by remote control from tho main control board at Keddic. Hopkins Appointed New Superintendent Appointment of L. P. Hopkins as superintendent of Southern Pacific's Portland division, ef fective July 1, with headquarters In Portland, was announced yes terday by J. W. corbett, general manager for the company. Hopkins, now head of the rail road's Salt Lake division, will succeed M. L. Jennings, pro moted to the superintendency of the Sacramento division, with headquarters at Sacramento, Calif.
