" PAGE THMI IWUlUV Bend Pilot Pont Wif lse Process Seasoning By ALBERT HERMANN In Charge Westorn Pine Laboratory (Editor's Nolo: Vestercluy, Mr. llermiinn told of experiments In the Western Pino Laboratory at Portlund In extracting water '''"In from pine wood to save the cost of kiln drying.) mm iitCTtpii -r, pnjcu, jm .,,n brnunhi uionu i iuB lnborutory In lurxor und larger sizes of equip ment nod In quantities up to 201) fact board measure In a single extraction. However, thcro remains between tills small scule laboratory work unci tho plant required for full sculo pro duction, such a largo gAp that we should be foolish to attempt to bridge It all at once. The answer is the erection of a no-culled pilot plant at Bend, Oregon wllh a capacity of 5000 ft. BM al a charge. Jn this plant It should be possible, because of Its very complete equipment with tho necessary control and measuring devices, to work oul tho economies and design details for a regular com- pk. ti ' d '" i' . inu iienu mm. in now unucr IV fi. So far as can be forecast at this time,! uboul six nionllis of work will be required lo determine the feasibility or failure of the process. I have mentioned thus fax only the beneficial effects on the grade, appearance and paintubillty of tho product. There are numerous oilier advantages to bo credited to tho process. Not tho least of Ihcse Is tho production of 50 to 70 pounds of ex tractives per thousand feet of lumber treated. These extractives prove upon analysis to be quite different from those obtained from the Southern Pines either by tho turpentining of living trees or by tho extraction of stumps. According lo Dr. Anderson's analysis, Pondorosa Pine sap wood extractives show about 70 of fat, 13 of completely purified rosin, known lo tho chemist as abiotic acid, something less than 5 of turpentine, !) of unsaponifiablo material and ! the rest free fatty acids. Extractions from henrtwood and from slumps will probably show different' percentages of llio snme materials. All of llio products so far discovered In extractives hnvo commercial uses rlttlit now and It Is qullo possible that ! tho extractives secured will more than pay for the whole process. If this should prove lo bo true, the cost of seasoning our material, which now is something like $3 per thousand feet, should be direct profit. . ElIIL H I it lull lemptc's annual spring ceremonial will be held In Klamath Kalis on Saturday, May 27, wllh Ed Ostendorf gen eral chairman of the committee.
