But the nails have been able to cripple It mora than other groups, as Its Jews have disappeared and Its other lead ers have become Isolated and have lost every possibility of participating in politics. Resistance of the masses to the nazls, therefore. Is compara tively weak. But millions of social demo t cratlc workers did not disappear and even now an important number of elderly workers and petty officials can be consid ered social democrats. Communist Leaders Communist leaders . are among those who want a total social and economic revolution. They are greatly aided by the fact that hundreds of thousands of persons have lost everything by air attacks or have been Oiven to desperation by the rd police regime. As a matter of fact, there Is great dangar that anarchy can break out In Germany. The communists have adapted them selves to the political forms of the third rclch. They have or ganized and carried out inten sive propaganda which is cam ouflaged as factual criticism of the nazi system. Active Resistance Active resistance must work under great difficulties. The first problem is how to dlssenv C inato information on the real state of affairs and avoid arrest by the gestapo. The opposition avails Itself of every means. Propaganda of the underground radio stations es pecially Is important. Hundreds of thousands of Germans live 11 legally. Sabotage A great part of the resistance is helped through sabotage In the leading circles. The opposl tlon has Its men in most of the secret party Institutions. Many nazis are trying to buy their future existence by serving the opposition. One of the greatest questions is what to do with the nazls after the war. Thousands of nazi party members have pulled Jn their sails during 1043. The opposition has learned how to divide the sheep from the goats. One oppositional leader said they are going to put a questionnaire before everyone with these words "Were you in a concentration camp- If not, why not?" Youth Clements A German youth I mot who, I am convinced, Is an enemy of the nazi system, discussed poll tics maturely and explained that tho opposition elements among the youth are numerous, that young groups are inclined to form circles of resistance. Within Hitler's jugend and la bor services is only one weapon with which youths may defend themselves that Is to be even harder than their surroundings, still observe the greatest care and resist even though pretend' Ing to be a nazi. "You would be surprised to learn that the worst Hitler en thuslasts in my group are lead' ers of the opposition," he de clared. Austrian Opposition Austrian opposition is direct ed at the same time both against naziism and against Germany. Not all oppositionists want to separate Austria from Germany, but perhaps 90 per cent of the opposition Is against naziism At the same time there is Aus trian resentment against Ger many and Berlin. Five years now under German rule have revived the concept of Austria Dally confronted by Germans, many Austrlans now ask "are we the same nation as the Germans?" Tho question Is now answered ncgotivoly by at least 75 per cent of the Austrian population. Thoro doosn t scorn to be a sharp conflict on the form of government among the majority of those against the Anschluss. Tho author has met social democrats who are convinced monarchists, and monarchlsm was very strong In Austria. It spread not: only among the upper classes but also among the lower middle class and among workers. Public Opinion Public opinion Is now more favorable toward Archduke Otto of Hapsburg than formerly. He has had great success' with his radio Speeches. At least one strong monarchist organization exists. Social democrats and communists represent probably more than 80 per cent of the population of Vlenpa, but they are rather weak in other areas. Most Austrlans seemed to be lieve that the restoration of the Danublan monarchy under the House of Hapsburg is the only possible framework which could hold the Danublan nations together. At the same time the nazi op position Is working there amid growing unrest, depression and defeatism among the people. A heavy blow has been dealt to Hitler s prestige because the peo pie have understood that - his personal Influence on the war's conduct has caused military cs tastrophes in eaatern Europe. Mlauae of Power ' Tho majority of the German pooplo have turned their backs to tho nazi party. The misuse of power by the party and wide spread corruption has aroused the bitterest feelings. There are three factors of direct political significance which are likely to survive the nazis the church, high finance, and the army. In the fight for freedom of con science the clergy, especially the Catholic church, has taken the lead. The Catholics have resisted the nazi regime more success fully than their protestant breth ren. The Roman Catholic church has also won good will which will be very Important after the war. Such men as Bishops Konrad Preysing and Clemens von Gal en have , played an Important role in fighting nazism. AH Germany knew, for instance, that Bishop Schulte in Cologne ha'd spoken about "the lie that limps through Germany." He was summoned by the gestapo to explain what he meant by speak ing in that fashion about Propa ganda Minuter Joseph Goebbels, who limps. The bishop. Indignant, said, "I was thinking about the devil." He was quickly released. PREVENTION OF FOREST FIR ES IS BUSINESS By WALTEM WIESENDANGER , Chairman Stop Forest Fires Committee Every business man in Klam ath Falls is interested in prevent ing forest fires. Every business man here is greatly pleased with the fine response which the pub lic has made to the stop forest fires campaign, and the fine rec ord we have had so far this year, There have been some bad fires, but on the whole we have come through pretty well. Every business man In this community, has a stake in the forests. Lumbering and farming are our two principal industries. A large part of every dollar that comes Into our mills and logging camps from the sale of logs and lumber, is used to pay wages to ! our woods workers. And those j woods workers, in turn, pat-; ronlze the business men of this city. Every forest fire destroys trees and togs which are the source of all of this income. The fellow that said "everybody loses when timber burns" sure hit the nail on the head Another reason why our busi ness men are interested in forest fire prevention is that they arc good citizens. They know that our forests make Klamath Falls a pleasant place to live. When we want to find rest and recrea tion, we go to our beautiful for ested hills. There we can find game, fish, and recreation. In peace times, these same forests help to draw tourists to our com-' munity. And that's good busi ness, too. MODERN WAR Some idea of how things have been stepped up since the last war Is shown in the 100 per cent increase in the range of Amer ican anti-aircraft artillery, the 250 per cent increase in individ ual firepower, the 300 per cent increase in bomb sizes, and -the 700 per cent increase in tank speed. RETAIL SPUD PRICE WILL BE UNDER CEILING WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (IP) Price ceilings for late potaties will prevail until the early po tato crop is generally available next June, but because of the large crop this year the retail prices will probably remain con siderably under the ceilings. The office of price administra tion, announcing the ceilings yesterday, said they were fixed at country shipper and inter mediate seller levels. Subse quent dealings are affected by fixed markups. As typical examples of prob able prices, the OP A said retail ceilings would range from 4.5 cents a pound next month to 5.5 cents a pound next June in such cities as New York, Los Angeles and Boston. Maine and Idaho price ceilings for the 1943 crop, No. 1 grade, sacked and loaded on carrier, per 100 pounds, range from $2.15 in October to 12.75 in June, 1944. The monthly In creaaes provide for absorption of storage charges. Minnesota October-June prices are 10 cents lower per 100 pounds a month.
