Plan your needs for at least a work whenever possible, Mako a list, and itemize the points required so you can tell how the weekly point budget wilt spread. If tho list calls for moro points than you have, figure on substituting low-point Hems for high-point ones and also uso as many non-rationed foods as possible. Figure your weekly point budget by adding together tho 48 points allowed to everyone in the family in each rationing period and divide by the number of weeks in the ration period. i . Mrs. America need not be concerned about the stocks of lard available this year because the 104J civilian supply is slightly more than it was dur ing 1042. And this is true despite an order by Secretary of Agriculture Wlckard, direct ing federally inspected packers to set asldo 50 per cent of the weekly lard production for war requirements. Recently tho War Production Board granted an in crease of fats and oils to makers of margarine. Wartime restrictions may have sounded the death knell for production of those gay metal canisters which are in most American , kitchens, but here's a substitute. A trans parent glass canister set Is the latest thing for the kitchen, and, of course, there is no need for labels to describe the contents. The far reaching effect of the war on Mrs, America's house hold is revealed even by minor details such as repainting a dull-looking radiator with alum inum or bronze paint. There is not very much of cither alumi num or bronze paint for civilian needs due to valuable war uses. The amount of aluminum paint for civilian use has been sharply curtailed, and only bronze powder ground before March 31, 1042 can be used for paints available in the retail store. Sponges also arc limited for household duties because of the great military needs. The amount of animal sponges avail able is at a low ebb, and rubber sponges are no longer being made. However, there is a new cellulose spongo which is filling home front needs as well as military. Certain canned chicken pro ducts will take a few cents mora than previously from the family budget because of a new OPA regulation. A large 28 to 30 ounce Jar of canned homcstyle chicken will cost about 11 cents moro than previously, but there Is more chicken in this product now. Mrs. America's family will continue to find a wide choice of price, type and quality of shoes just as prior to rationing, thanks to the War Production Board. The WPB has required manufacturers to follow similar price ranges and lines as in the last six months. This is aimed to prohibit any emphasis on high priced lines. And at the same time Mrs. America can look forward to outfitting the family for Easter at approxi mately the same cost of last year. The Office of Price Ad ministration gave this guarantee in ' issuing pricing rules for re tailers and wholesalers of dresses, suits, coats, skirts and blouses to use for spring and summer merchandise. In the form of I rider to a minor naval personnel bill, the measure would require all navy yards to turn over to local se lective service boards every three months the names of all employes who have been absent from work without justification. The boards then determine whether such workers should be further deferred from the draft. Urging support for the legis lation, Rep. Lyndon Johnston (D-Tex.) asserted that absentee ism sank 42 Liberty ships in De cember alone." Strike Measure Coming "I mean by that," he explain ed, "the man hours lost through absenteeism would have pro duced that many ships. "The German subs couldn't get but 31 in that month," he said. Johnson told the rules com mittee he had introduced an other measure which would ap ply the same provision to all workers, and Rep. Vinson (D-Ga.), chairman of the house naval committee, in response to ques tions, said the committee was planning to bring in "before summer" a bill dealing with "strikes and such things."
