LABOR HOLDS ATTENTION OF LOGGING PORTLAND, Jan. 22 (P) Manpower problems hold the at tention of the Pacific Logging Congress today after the presi dent of tho West Coast Lumber men's association paid "the in dustry high tribute for its 1942 production record. OrvUle R. Miller told 400 delegates from Oregon, Wash ington, California, Idaho and Montana yesterday that if the navy's E pennants were award ed to loggers, "there would be one flying from every snag in tho woods." Demand Smallor The fir belt produced 8,700, 000,000 feet last year, the pine region 6,050,000,000 'and the redwood area 800,000,000, he said, "and we did it in spite of furnishing Henry J. Kaiser with thousands ot skilled loggers to help build his ships." This year's lumber demand will not bo quite so great. Mil ler predicted but there will he more emphasis on specialized types, particularly airplane lum ber. You Know. Who He warned the Industry to meet peacetlmo problems with the same determination it tackled war production, adding, "if you don't, there are those in high places who are eager to do it for you and you know who I mean." PORTLAND, Jan. 22 (P) The gals who enter beauty contests and compete for the title of "Best Dressed Woman" can't hold a torch to this one. They are strictly minor-league beside a competition sponsored by the office of war information to select the champion woman welder of the United States, England and Australia. This war-influence reversal of the trend in women's affairs had its origin with the Ingalls Ship building corporation of Pasco agoula, Miss. The yard came forth with a champion and a grandmother at that Mrs. Jen nie Mae Turner. She, the yard informed one and all shipbuild ers, could out-weld any woman in the nation. Henry J. Kaiser's Oregon Shipbuilding corporation here, with a flock of Liberty ship pro duction records already to its credit, couldn't let the Ingalls challenge pass, especially since it claimed to be the first yard in the country to hire women weld ers. - To Oregon's acceptance of the challenge, Ingalls replied by wire; "Office of war information arranging world-wide contest be tween England, Australia and America. Will notify you when arrangements are made. Turner raring to go." Thus, the competition flared onto the international scene be fore the first torches met. But Ingalls and Oregon still have their private duel on the fire and they hope to settle it before the OWI rings In all the other women who wield the modern magic wands. It is very important that the country be prepared In every way it can to write a just peace and to organize world opinion to provide both peace and post war conditions that will make another such conflict impossi ble.
