Shanter Golf Enters Double Phase Today By GAYLE TALBOT CHICAGO, July 22 (rP) The fam O'Shanter golf tournament entered its double phase today, with 64 of the nation's top imateurs wading through two rounds of match play while the professionals swung into action In an 18-hole qualifying test lor their 15,000 medal play tvent beginning tomorrow. All of the country's "name" rmateurs survived the qualify ing rounds the last two days. Only 16 of them still will be llive and kicking tonight. As for the professionals, their gualifying test today did not Concern the game's leading fig ares insofar as participation in Ihe big money play starting to morrow was concerned, all the big stars, men like Byron Nel lon and Ben Hogan, qualified automatically through their past Heeds. The Angel, born in the Ural mountains but raised in France, weighs 263 pounds and stands only a shade over i)i feet. In the above pic ture he's being measured by scientists at Harvard university who termed him the closest approach to the Neanderthal man of antiquity they had ever seen. Marathons disguised as baseball just as home runs are the trade pitching of the Cincinnati Reds, etc. For this reason that 17-inning struggle of the Braves and Chi cago Cubs yesterday was bound to happen. It wasn't quite as historical as the 26-inning 1-1 tie between the Braves and Brooklyn in 1920, the most ex tended game in National league records, or the 20-inning battle with the Dodgers in 1940 which took five hours and 19 minutes to play longest time of game in major league history. But it was the longest game this season and the Braves won 4-3 with a unique-, finish .that made it entirely satisfactory to the Boston fans. The Braves tied the score in the eighth with two runs and after eight more scoreless stanzas they loaded the bases with none out in the 17th on three successive bunts. Then old John Cooney stepped to the plate and draped a smart single to right center to finish the fra cas four hours and 17 minutes after it started. While this was going onr the Brooklyn Dodgers curbed the Cincinnati Reds 8-4 with 12 hits in six innings against Paul Der ringer. The St. Louis Cardinals kept the ' Dodgers .from increasing their National league lead, how ever, by bowling over the Phila delphia Phils 6-1 in a night game with Howard Krist pitching six hit ball. Three homo run3 and Buster Maynard's two-run pinch single in the eighth inning gave Carl Hubbell and the New York Giants a 6-5 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates in a twilight game.. The New York Yankees ex tended their .winning streak to ten games and Joe DiMaggio stretched his hitting string to 18 games in an 8-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians. The Boston Red Sox dropped a 10-inning 5-4 decision to Chi cago to let the Yanks slip an other game ahead. Bobby Docrr hit his 12th homer, a double and two. singles and Ted Williams made three hits, but these prov ed insufficient. Annual Lincoln County Regatta Carded for Sunday OCEANLAKE, Ore., July 22 (IP) The annual Lincoln coun ty regatta, which draws out standing outboard racers from all over the northwest, will be held Sunday, July 26, if "nothing happens," Dr. Boyd Jenkins, president of the regatta, board, said. Plans for the contest on Devils lake are being made through Bob Wirostek, Portland out board enthusiast, who said many of the racers will soon be going into the army and they want at least one more fling.
