V ACS v i '' OF SPUDS UP FOR DIVERSION According to information from George Cummings, AAA repre sentative here in Klamath Falls, to handle the feed diversion pro gram for potatoes, applications have been received for the diver sion of 86,824 sacks of No. 2 or better potatoes. This amount is from the three counties Klam ath, Modoc and Siskiyou about 38,000 being from Klamath. Ross Aubrey's office report that dye has been applied to 22,303 sacks. Figures for each county show that 38,990 sacks have been au thorized for diversion in Klam ath county; 15,479 sacks in Mo doc county; and 32,355 sacks in Siskiyou county, and to date 6305 sacks have been dyed and ready for feed in Klamath coun ty; 4000 sacks in Modoc county and 12,000 sacks in Siskiyou county. Anyone who has produced po tatoes in compliance with the AAA program and who can feed the dyed potatoes to livestock, may make application and re ceive 25 cents per sack for such feeding. Applications can be made at the county agent's of fice or the AAA office. Potato growers feel that the diversion program has had its effect in price increases and that the potato price situation has been relieved to that extent. IN JOB SIT ' A decrease of nearly 18 per cent in February unemployment benefit payments and a drop of 25 per cent in the number of initial claims filed this year are new indications of the improve ment in the job market during the past twelve months. . Checks sent out last month by the unemployment commission totaled $421,442 as compared with $511,766 for February, 1940. The first two months of 1940 saw 40,971 claims for job less insurance filed, while this year the figure is 30,562. The monthly report of the commission, as made public by Administrator Silas Galser, shows $11,034,400 In the trust fund, compared with $11,063,473 at the end of January and S8,- 664,898 a year ago. The active file of available workers also shows an 18 per cent decrease. Reports from 23 employment offices operating under the commission place the active file at 41,662 as compared with 50,685 a year ago. POLICE ASKED TO Police Thursday were asked to be on the lookout for a man aged about 25 years, wearing a cowboy hat, blue denim trou sers and an old leather jacket, who Wednesday assertedly drove off in a used automobile belonging to the Turner Chev rolet company. According to a report filed at headquarters the man took the car, a green roadster, out on trial and failed to return. Another report turned into city police by Harry Carrol of the St. Francis apartments stated a spotlight was stolen from Car rol's car as it was parked in front of his residence on the night of March 12. Federal Indian Agent John Arkell reported Thursday that a woman's saddle,, washing mach ine, 30-30 rifle, and lines from a harness have been stolen from Mrs. Eleanor Butler McNoise of Modoc Point. - Thursday's police court roster included seven drunks, 1 drunk and disorderly and 7 traffic vio lators. OBITUARY LEONARD RAYMOND WELTON Leonard Raymond Welton, a resident of Klamath county for the past four years, passed away in this city on Wednesday, March 12. The new overpass and connec tion of the Weed-Klamath and Pacific highways at Weed is about finished, and the Duns muir chapter of the Internation al Footprinters association thinks a celebration is in order. Chamber of commerce offices here have received a letter from the Footprinters, suggesting col laboration in a celebration of the completion of the improvement. Secretary Earl Reynolds has replied to the Footprinters that Klamath Falls would be much interested in such an enterprise. The improvement will change the junction at Weed, eliminat ing the winding drive through "nigger town" and speeding up north and southbound traffic over the Weed-Klamath high way. Hunter of the state system of higher education from $10,000 to $7500 a year. The bills, by Reps. Richard L. Neubergcr (D-Multnomah) and J. D. Perry (D-Columbia), would have provided that no state of ficial could be paid a higher sal ary than the $7300 a year paid to the governor. Neubergcr said it is unjust to pay the cost of maintaining Hunter's home, and he criticized the state for paying an annuity policy for Hunter, costing $1330 a year. He said Hunter actually re ceives $17,000 or $18,000 a year, asserting that if the state would buy his clothes and means, the state then would bo paying all of Hunter's living costs. Rep. A. Rennic (R-Bcnton) said he feared that if Hunter's salary were reduced, the state would lose his services. Rep, James A. Rodman (R Lane) said that Hunter's salary is not out of line with those of other states, and he added that "the salary of the governor should not be a yardstick for other salaries, because the gov ernor's office is an office of hon or. If you want to pay less for a chancellor, you can, but you will get a man worth just what you will pay him.' In explaining his vote against the bills. Rep. Warren Erwin (D Multnomah) said "this is just a feud between Dick (Neubergcr) and the chancellor." but Neu berger heatedly denied this, as serting "I hardly know the chan cellor at all.
