The board of geographical names, department of the inter . ior, has selected the name of Hardin butte for the 4469-foot promontory located four miles from the north entrance of Lava Beds national monument, and formerly known by old-timers as Goose Nest butte. During the Modoc war the point was referred to as Gravel ly butte beciuse of the gravel found there. Hardin butte was the destina tion of the Thomas Wright de tachment of troops sent out April 28, 1873, by Colonel Alvin Gil lem to locate the Indians after they had left the stronghold. As result this party was attacked by the Modocs and every man who stayed to fight was either wounded or killed, including four officers and 16 enlisted men, killed and two officers and 13 men wounded, some of these dying later. - Charles B. Hardin, member of the relief expedition sent in to rescue Wrieht's men under com mand of Colonel John Green, was the first to discover the battlefield. He came upon the scene at night. It was said. Young Hardin was then a member of Troop G, First Cavalary. In 1927, Major Hardin visited the Lava beds and located the site of the battlefield. He was an Instructor at Oregon State college at the time and had risen from the rank of private to major. He died in 1940, in Den ver, Colorado.
