'BOOSE NEST
RENAMED FOR
WAR VETERAN
January 21. 1941
' Goose Nest butte Is no more.
The board of geographical
names, department of the inter
. ior, has selected the name of
Hardin butte for the 4469-foot
promontory located four miles
from the north entrance of Lava
Beds national monument, and
formerly known by old-timers
as Goose Nest butte.
During the Modoc war the
point was referred to as Gravel
ly butte beciuse of the gravel
found there.
Hardin butte was the destina
tion of the Thomas Wright de
tachment of troops sent out April
28, 1873, by Colonel Alvin Gil
lem to locate the Indians after
they had left the stronghold. As
result this party was attacked
by the Modocs and every man
who stayed to fight was either
wounded or killed, including
four officers and 16 enlisted men,
killed and two officers and 13
men wounded, some of these
dying later.
- Charles B. Hardin, member of
the relief expedition sent in to
rescue Wrieht's men under com
mand of Colonel John Green,
was the first to discover the
battlefield. He came upon the
scene at night. It was said. Young
Hardin was then a member of
Troop G, First Cavalary.
In 1927, Major Hardin visited
the Lava beds and located the
site of the battlefield. He was
an Instructor at Oregon State
college at the time and had risen
from the rank of private to
major. He died in 1940, in Den
ver, Colorado.
