Aug. 21 UP) New European war fears assailed the stock market today and drove down leaders 1 to more than 3 points, many to lowest quotations since early July. Dealings speeded up for a brief interval at the start, with motors and steels changing hands In blocks of 1000 to 4000 shares. The pace slackened thereafter and closing prices were a point or so above the bottom In many cases. Transfers for the five hours ap proximated 850,000 shares. Overnight headlines apparently scoured speculative sentiment, bringing the opinion from contin ental sources a show-down for hostilities or peace was likely this week. War staples put on a burst of strength but other commodities were mixed. Stocks, under pressure the great er part of the day were U. S. Steel, Bethlehem, Chrysler, Gen eral Motors, American Telephone, U. S. Rubber, Goodyear, Great Northern, Union Pacific, Loft, American Can, Du Pont and West inghouse.
