the stock market today and drove
down leaders 1 to more than 3
points, many to lowest quotations
since early July.
Dealings speeded up for a brief
interval at the start, with motors
and steels changing hands In
blocks of 1000 to 4000 shares.
The pace slackened thereafter and
closing prices were a point or so
above the bottom In many cases.
Transfers for the five hours ap
proximated 850,000 shares.

voked a wave of buying In the
world grain markets today, giving
wheat prices here their best up
turn In several months. ;
Gains here amounted to aa much
as two cents a bushel at one stage
but the market absorbed profit
taking on the upturn that caused
frequent reactions. Winnipeg
prices were up more than two
cents while gains in European mar
kets reached about a cent.
Export circles reported that the
first sales of U. S. wheat under the
new subsidy program had been au
thorized out this was not confirm
ed before the market closed.
Wheat closed at the day'a highs,
U-2ic higher than Saturday.
