It was Ktttne on toward mid Dtsht Dow. and there vera few va cant tables. Almost In hit ear. the orchestra was blnttlna and blarint In tha fevered manner peculiar to night club orchestras; on the tint dance floor a dozen couple wem gliding and shultllng bark and forth. Larry looked ebom him. resting his gaze elowlj on one face alter another. That atont, red-faced man there In the rrnv suit: obriousij a bolstarous but basically harmless citizen, of the good-sport-beavy-apender type. The girl with htm was uat as easy to classify: party girl, neat in appearance, gay In manner, proud of her ability to take car of herself but apt to over estimate that same ability, onoa la a bine moon. Next table . . . two boy and two girls In evening clothes; nice looking youngster beginning to g-et a bit loud and uncertain In speech. ... No what business, mused Larry, hare fonr decent kids like them coming to a place like this? They can't be out of high school yet. Oh, veil, they're not By children. Next table ... a woman In black, IE or thereabout, sitting alone and looking forever toward the entrance: waiting tor someone, clearly, with scent patience, and me thodically downing old-tashioneda a she waited. Whoever It waa that wag late tor hie appointment waa going to hear something when he lid show op. Next table . '. . three meet and a Ctrl, the latter seated with her back toward Larry's table, so that all he could see of her was a dark drees and a large, floppy hat. One of the men wore tweeds and talked to her affably; a business man, by the look of him, prepossessing ex cept for a vaguely secretive look about the month. One of the other men was a raagy chap la blue serge, - who was dreamily looking at the dancers sad pnfltag at a clg aret; the other was a small man, black-hatred, almost foppish In a dinner suit, who was slumped down In hi chair and seemed to be lis tening inattentively to the man In tweeds. Mixed grin, thought Larry; a queer combination, that party. In some ways. And I can't say I care a whole let for that little saan's looks, either. T OOEN8 an, be saw his friend. LiHih Hagan. the sergeant ef detectives. replied to his greetings. eslisd oat a chair, and sat down. "SUM looklngr he asked. Larry nodded. Hagan followed the direction of Bis eyes, and, like Larry, seemed k and the foursome worth atten tion. After studying each of the three men carefully, he turned to , burr inquiringly: "Know any ef 'emf asked Larry. Regan nodded. 1 know tie gay in the tweeds," to said. "He's Mark Hopkins. Runs an anto agency here. Dp In , the backs, so they say. Good-time Charlie on the side; sports pro moter in the wintertime." . Larry wrinkled his eyebrows. "Mark Hopkins? Where've I heard that name? Oh, sure. Young fellow I know here in Dover works (or him. Bells cars or tries to." "Teahf" Hagan seemed only mildly interested. ' "Know any of the others?" Hagan shook his head. "I've seen 'em in here several times, that's all." The music stopped, the dancers ! returned to their tables, a young man with sn accordion came out and proceeded to sing, badly, a j somewhat risque song, made more I offensive by the smirks and leers with which he acconjpauled it; and the waiter brought Larry the food he had ordered. Larry ate in al ienee, and presently the entertainer withdrew and there waa more -music The government man lcoked Rain at the party which had at tracted his attention. The raugy foung fellow with the unruly blond balr had got up, and so bad the - girl In the floppy bat: they made their way to the open floor and be gun to dance. In a moment the; panned close to Lorry's table. 1 Hagan laid a hand on bla arm. . "Larry," he said, "did you get look at the girl? If that Isn't four Evelyn Brady, I'm cockeyed -Larry looked again. As she and aer partner alowly revolved and pivoted among the other dancers, ke got fleeting glimpses of her face "Looks like her," he said. "But" his eyos returned to the table she -. had left "none of the men in her party look In the least like our friend Wlngy. Wlngy's a red-head with a busted nose. Try and And anybody like that at that table." They looked again at the man who was dancing with the girl. "He's out, anyway," said Larry. "Wlngy Lewis is short This gny must be six feet tail." "Well." aald Hagan. "that black haired guy In the dinner clothes Is hnrt ennuith. Only hla hair ain't red, and hla noae la as airtight as mine." T ARRT looked at the detective '-'and grinned "Stratglitrr." he said Then the grin vanished "You want to remember, though." he snld. "that there are such things as hair dyea and beamy doctors" "Hair dyea -suro." said Magan. "But what do any of these bonds have to do with beauty doctors?" I.nrry laughed shortly. "You'd he surprised." he said . "Did in IMIIInpter go to oner I'hey know all the trick, these birds It one ol them hns a nan that's knuwn to too many detectives, be doesn't mind going to some unscrupulous lace lifter and having It chanted You cant alwnya tell much by oho lOKraplia. these days." "Makes eur ohs kind of tough, then, don't It'" asked Hacan "Yea . . except thai there ere other nays," said Larry thuu.hl fully.
