THE EVENTNG HERALD. KLAMATH FALLS. OKEnON Saturday, Tebruary 21, 1U31' Wesley Ketchell Wins by Technical Knouckout PAGE SEX KNOCKOUTS FEATURE 11 Yes, males. It wsa some bat tle. In card featured by three knockout and In which at least eight knockdowns were scored before the evening was over, Wesley Ketchell, thst merciless, hard-hitting middleweight of Portland, won orer Borneo Le sion, Fullerton high school youth, on a technical knockout In the third round of their sched uled 10-round bout at Merrill last night. Although still on his leet and with a gameneaa that urged him to go on, LeMon was suffering with long and severe gash orer his eye, and waa In a bad way when Meferee Jim Stev ens stopped the tight about half way through the third round and raised Ketchell's hand as a signal ot Tlctory. A Terrific Battle. - There waa as much excitement crammed Into the short two and a half rounds as is often seen In a full 10-ronnd bout, and not one of the Urge number of fans who saw the encounter left the Merrill community hall with a feeling other than It was a great battle. It waa a fight from the be ginning. There was no feeling out" as Is ordinarily the case during the first round. Ketchell started right out from the sound ot the gong to assassinste the game LeMon. LeMon started out to murder Ketchell, and ' they went at it hammer and tongs. There waa a swish as the gloyea of the battlers sailed through the air, and many a loud thud as one connected with the other. The lightning left of Ketchell. which he uses with marvelous speed, precision and deadliness, waa Out Into action from the outset and was finding its mark on LeMon's body and head. The pile-driving right of the dufky skinned Californisn was swing ing out far and wide for Ketch ell's head and found its mark, though pot squarely, more than once. It was fart and hectic and the first round ended with honors even. A Memorable Round. The second round was one which will live In fistic mem ories for a long, long time. There was more action, more savage hitting and gameness dis played In that canto than has ever been crammed Into one round in a Southern Oregon ring. Evidently each, started that round with the intention ot storing the other away be fore the close. LeMon bored right Into Ketchell and took the fight away from him for a few seconds. He Dotnerea Aeicnen with straight left Jabs to the face and head and In the melee that ensued connected with his ' right to the head. The fans were shouting and general bed lam ensued as the two stood toe to toe exchanging blows which resounded from one end ot the spacious hall to the other, and both were near the point ot grogglness. But, the shiftiness of Ketchell prevented LeMon getting set to deliver his pile driving right with full force, and following the LeMon rally of a few seconds, the vicious Ketchell, recovering from the ef fects ot LeMon's offensive, un leashed an attack that for ring generalship, short, snappy and deadly blows, has never been ap proached in the history ot the fight game In Southern Oregon. Ketchell's lightning left connect ed with LeMon's bead and face once, twice and the California youth crumpled to the canvas in a neutral corner. At the count ot two he arose to his knees, where he rested until the referee had counted seven. He was no sooner on his feet. however, than Ketchell was showering him with a succession of short, smashing rights and lefts, and LeMon went down a second time Just as the bell rang. LeMon Is Game. The powerful blows of Ketch ell had their telling effect on the game LeMon, and although somewhat recovered from the se vere pumelling of that torrid second round, it was evident at the opening ot the third that be could not weather the storm of blows which Ketchell would un leash. LeMon, displaying a game ness that won hint hearty ap plause, sallied in to give Ketch ell the best battle which his weak legs would permit, but his efforts were short lived. Ketch ell caught him with a left to the body, and shot a deadly right which landed immediately above LeMon's eye and he went . down for a count ot nine. Ilomeo arose, his spirit willing to wade In again, but his legs were trembling and sagging be neath bis body aa Reteree btev ens waved him aside and raised Ketchell's hand In token ot vic tory. . Although LeMon expressed re gret at Stevens' method ot ter minating the fight, the latter displayed good judgment and saved the game youth unneces sary punishment. Ketchell de clared following the fight that LeMon was one ot the gam eat men he ever met, and he has squared away in the prise ring with at least a huudred or more. Another Great Battle. The four-round aeml-wlndup between Jack Breedlove of Bend, IS8. and Red Mondotle, 157, Ban Diego lad and mate of Le Mon in the atable of Jack Walk r, was a wow. Mondotte, who made his second start In a pro fessional ring, was awarded the decision. He smothered the Bend led with a rain of blows In the opening round and floored him twice. Kxrlted and over anxious to flnlxh his adversary. Mondotto worked In too close to . get in knockout punch before I E CARD the gong announced the close of the hectlo round. The second round waa full of action with Mondotte leading all the way, but unable to lay Breedlove low for the count of ten because ot being over-anxious. Breedlove staged a sur prising comebsck In the third and If anything had a shade the best of it in that round. He landed several hard drives to Mondotte'a face and head, but tbe red haired lad demonstrated that he could take aa well as give. The fourth round found both bovs tired, but Mondotte easily had the better of 1U Short and Sweet." The four-round bout between Battling Leo Burns. Sprague klver Indian, and Jesse Ayala, another Jack Walker protege, of San Diego, which waa expected to steal a part of the ahow, did as waa expected but only tor a few seconds. The fight lasted exactly 47 seconds. Three licks were struck. Ayala hit Burns twice and Bursa hit the floor. It was a long song the birdies aang tor Burns, who was still in the land of dreams when he was supported to the dressing room. Aysla is another of the voting fighters Walker has under his wing. His blows hsve the force of dynamite and nnder the coaching of that veteran gives promise ot developing into a top-notch man. Another snort (me. It was Bulldog Beno, Pelican City Italian youth, who started down for last evening's card. His bout, scheduled for four rounds, was only abont aa many seconds old when he landed a haymaker on Tom Bessler. Boss ier got np before the count of ten, hut was so wobbly his sec ond tossed a towel into the ring and the fight ended. Bessler was still weaving around like a horse with the blind staggers when he was helped from the ring. Redskin Jackson win. Johnny Jackson added an other scalp to his belt when he took the decision irom sua Campbell of this city. The fight ing Modoc Indian punished Campbell severely in tbe first round, and not to be outdone by those knock-down punchers who preceded and followed him, downed the white boy tor the connt of seven. It looked like curtains for Campbell when the round ended, but he came back stronger in the second and Jack son hsd only a shade of that round. In the third Campbell discovered he hsd a left fist, be gan using it, and not only heia Jackson at bay, hut took the round by a shade. The boys fought on pretty even terms In the fourth, but Jsrkson had a shade and was entitled to the decision. DeMott Get Decision. Jesse DeMott, light heavy weliht snud farmer of Merrill, was awarded a decision over Gus Eaton, colored boy. Eaton, al though a superior boxer and showing DeMott up during the first two rounds, waa unable to withstand the pace and saved himself only by frequent clinches and holding on. It was me onir bout of the evening in which one or the other of the con testants did not collide with the canvas-covered floor. Roy and Gelbert Jonas, two game and fast brothers of the midget type, put on the curtain raiser, and it was a hummer the two little "pugs" staged. while waitinc for tbe appear ance ot Ketchell and LeMon in the ring. Dolores Bitterly sang a song and did a tap dance, fol lowed by a song and. dance by little Miss Ruth Barbonr. A Super-Card. Today the vast crowd of fans are praising Joe Bickerstaff, matchmaker, and Tnle" Lake Post of the American Legion, nnder whose auspices the event was held, for staging a super-card. It was that, and nothing less. Every bout waa a fight from the word go, and the main event was all that advance notices ssid it would be. Today fans .r rinmorim to see Ketchell In action again and If he is matched with a man ot his cal iber the fight will attract tne biggest crowd In history. James Stevens ot Tule Lake refereed and be did a good Job of It- He used excellent Judg ment all the way tnrongn, ana tbe only possible criticism that can be offered in connection with his work was the slowness with which he counted.
