GOPCO OWE 'liOEOIllllL Singular Honor Accorded Yreka Man; Third of Co. to be Named The California Oregon Power Company which operates throughout 'Southern Oregon and Northern Cali fornia haa again won national recog nition through the sward of the In sult Medal to another members of the Copco organisation. This makes the third Insult Medal to be presented to Copco employees In recognition or their efforts in sav ing the lives of their fellow workers through resuscitation from electric shock. This honor Is donbly ap preciated when It Is known that only four of these coveted medals have been awarded In the entire North west and three of these have gone to employees of the local company. The first of these awards was made to Howard Dynan of Medford on December 1. 1925. the second to Ted Montgomery of Klamath Falls on August 27. 1928. and the last one to Emmit Knackstedt of Yreka on May -J. 1917. The history ot the accident which so nearly proved fatal Is as follows: ' On July 19, 1925. Emmit Knack stedt, known to all of Btskiyou Coun ty as "Perky," was engaged with Barney Gray in making repairs to the Montague substation. They were replacing some disconnecting switches which had been destroyed a short time before by lightning. Gray was in the substation, putting a switch in place behind the switch board. Knackstedt was engaged at the moment outside the substation building. He heard the familiar flash of a short circuit an3 a groan from Gray. Pushing inside he found that the switch in Gray's hand had slipped Into a line switch adjoining, and Gray was stretched ! on the floor unconscious and not i breathing. i Hurriedly dragging Gray out onto the floor In front of the switchboard. Knackstedt applied th eresuscltation methods in which all Copco men are i trained. His man was to all ap- pearances dead, bnt after ten minutes ) work. Knackstedt was rewarded by a return of life to his patient. After , a few hours rest. Gray was back on , the Job, none the worse for hi ex - perience. Without the prompt ministrations of Knackstedt. Gray would not have lived through his ex- perience. - Following the accident the torn- pany made the usual report to the National Electric Light Association ; and after thorough Investigation of all circumstances, the National Safety Council authorised the award of the Instill Medal to Knackstedt for bis prompt and efficient action in a vital emergency. - : . Hovey Break Limb Charles Hovey. son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Hovey of San Fran cisco suffered a broken limb recent ly while attending college at Har vard. Hovey was knocked to the pavement by a passing motorist. Richard Hovey. his father Is one of the prominent lumber men of Cali fornia and Oregon and I here tor several days - transacting business wlthh Is father. C. L. Hovey or San Francisco.
