The chances are that adminis tration senators In combating Couz ens may Indulge In a few personalit ies. They may point to the fact that Mellon paid an Income tax of more ihnn $1,000,000 and that C'ouzens, admittedly the possessor of several millions, paid a tax of only 81 200. The Old Guard senators are like ly to suggest that the country itttpjClt bo Intorested In knowing just how a man with " mu"h Health as L'ouzens could get his tax so low. Of course, Oouseps' h--,nesty in .'II iug a return is not challenged in the least, but as a means cf checkmat ing his activities they may attempt to turn the Investigation to the question of tax-exempt securities the favorite tax reducing met'iod trf millionaires. They're less mindful of sartorial correctness. They don't know lan-1 guages. This was brought out very: conspicuously at the recent gathering ) of the Interparliamentary Union here. Tho American delegates dressed well enough. Their suits were brush ed and pressed and fit better than the Europeans'. Practically without expection they wore ordinary sacks, with soft felt hats and tan shoes, as often as not. Tho Europeans, equally almost without exception, never appeared in anything less than the fullest "morn ing dress" cutaway, pearl gray trou sers, plug hat, patent leathers and spats, gloves, monocle in more than a few cases the whole regalia. , With the women it was just the reverse. Many of the foreign dele gates had their wives with them. For style they were nowhere, com pared with their hostesses at least, according to American ideas. The Latins, among Ihe visiting wo men, came the nearest to measuring up to the requirements of American tastes in dress, but even the gowns of these appeared to awaken no feel ings of envy, so far as feminine Washington was concerned.
