Logging Record Believed Made by Washington Outfit Recently one m' the best known log ging companies in the Northwest an nounced Unit ii planned a change in working hours during the dry season in the hope that the change would result in fewer fires. The plan was to start work about four o'clock in the morning ami stop about one o'clock in the afternoon. Such hours would enable I lie men to work dur ing the cool of the day and would mean Hint the campa would he idle during the hot afternoons when the fires ordinarily start and gel beyond gohtrol, I'ire rarely slnrts early in the morning, Pelican Cat Man Drives New Auto Heinle Sniallfielil. cat doctor al the Pelican Hay camps. Plans now under way also contemplate the erection of a new mill with a .tjreaier capaci ty. 1 Irillers are now at work en deavoring to secure a water Supply at the new camp site, ad equate to supply all needs. The Topsy Lumber company, ow ned and operated by the Kes tersOns, lias now approximately five million feet of lumber in the yards and so far this season has Snipped but very little. The mill has this season been averaging about 68,000 feet per day. an increase of about 4,000 feel over last year's record. Smokers Found at Fault in Causing Two Forest Fires Smouldering cigarettes and burn ing pipe heels have both again been legally proved guilty of causing for est fires, reports tho U. S. Forest Service. Recently two fires were started on the Chelan National forest in j Washington. One was along the I rtd between Ilrewster and Carlton. It was caused by throwing lighted cigarettes from a car. The guilty party was apprehended with suf ficient evidence for conviction in Justice Oelssler's court at Brewster. In addition to the fire and court costs imposed by state law. the party was assessed $11.00. the cost of ex tinguishing the fire. The other fire was caused by a sheephcrder on Biitermilk Croek, who wont into a willow thicket to cut a pole. While running around in the thicket he knocked his pipe from his mouth, spilling the burn ing tobacco. The fireman on Look out Mountain reported a fire be tween the forks of Butermllk. When the Forest Service trail crew ar rived .one and one-fourth hours lat er, they found and S-arre fire. The sheeplierdev admitted having heen the cause of it. The judge did the rest. Joe Smoky Still Has Money Left; Now Hunts Berries .Toe Smoky, veteran who left the railway service at Modoc Camp af ter serving a long five months its fireman, was seen during the week at Pelican Hay camp, headed for tho Huckleberry Patch. He denied ru mors that he was hunting a Job fir ins a battleship and for the bone lit of his friends In Modoc Camp advised LumhcrloKiio that he still hud somo of his $4 00 left. Welch Now Working in Pelican Camp Jim Welch, for years waiter at the Club Cafo in Klamath Falls and known' to hundreds of Klamath county residents, is now working in the cookhouse of tho Pelican Hay Lumber company at Cunip No. 2. Every now and then a man tries tn rep, 'ill the laws of niiture and the laws of nature ropenl him. TOPS LUMBER COM CHANGE New Device For Handling Flat-Piled Lumber Said To Promise Big Kiln Savings Operation of a device for unloading flat-piled kiln dried lumber from the carriages mechalically, an inven tion of Matt Egan, superintendent of the Algoma Lumber company, is being awaited with interest by mill oper ators of this district. Success of the experiment will mean a great saving in the handling of kiln-dried lumber, operators 'state. S I IS Dry Rot Attacking Trees now Cut in Many Sections Near Here VALUE DEPRECIATES ; Delay of Few Years Would Reduce Value of Many Timber Tract Illustrative of the fact 'that logging has been too 'long delayed in some parts of Klamath county is the 'fact that in a recent ship- ment of logs from the Peli i can Bay camp, fully one out i of 10 was found to be a vic- ; tim of dry rot. In many in- stances the rot extends from ; the butt upwards for as I much as 20 feet. This re ' suits in a d'stinct loss as the icut has to be tapered to ; eliminate this worthless ; strip. The condition is due i to the fact that the timber lis over-ripe, a striking re : buttal of the claims of those I who assert that the timber ; should be left untouched for I future generations. In some instances, delay Of a few ' years more WOUld mean a I depreciation in value oi an 'the timber in some tracts. I Another Mill May Change To Electric Dogs ! Installation Is Con sidered at Shaw Bertram j Installation of electric doits next season at the Shaw-Bertram mill ! Is a possibility, officials of that concern admitted tills week. Due to the fact that there yet remains but a small portion of Tunning time thla year, the change I if made, will not be considered un 1 til after the fall shutdown, it was I said. Electric dogs hnvo been installed at the Pelican Bay lumber com pany and are said to be giving gootl service, resulting in saving a greater number of clears than was the cause with the old-style dog. which marred the face of the hoard. The electric dog grips at the upper and lower edges of the hoard alone. Lamm Completes New Drying Shed Work on a new drying shed, to contain finished dry lumber, has been practically completed at the Lamm Lumber company plant at Modoc Point. The shell Is 113x1811 and contains an inclosed loading dock and other fenturcs. ON VACATION Fred Lam ben, pond man for tho Wheeler-Olmstend, Is on a Ihree wceks vacation, visiting friends In California. OPERATOR FIND MUCH TIMBER IS NOW PAST PR I I h- tlovicp. known as an unfitnnk er, is tyiteadod for use in unloading lamber which Is foadad flat for kiln drying. There Is at present n dcvlc on the market knows as the Kvans slacker and unstacker, which pro vides for the handling of lumber wbjch is laid on its side for drying. The Evans device Ib quite expen sive, however. The great majority of medium sized mills favor the flat method of piling and that at any rate prevents the use of the Evans pat ent. Three men are ordinarily required for unloading lumber from kiln cars, two to handle the lumber itself and one to handle the stickers. Success of the device invented by Egan will do awEv with two men. Only the stickernta'n will be required and be can also attend lo the operation of the unloadcr. The machine, now under construc tion, consists of an electric hoist and a revolving overhead chain, with lugs. The action of the two Is such that as each tier Is stripped trim the top of the load the hoist auto matically raises the load to the cor rect level for the next lug to take hold. In addition 'to the saving that it will make, one big feature of the device is ita small expense. With the exception of the motor and a few gears, all purts needed can be sup plied by the ordinary mill black smith shop, it is declared. ii II L Vigorous denial that the Topsy Lumber company plant was having trouble with either whooping cough or typhoid, as rumored, was niado I Sunday by officials of the company. Accordin to these, there has not been one single case of whooping cough and only one case in which a man was suspected of having ty phoid. The man in question was taken to a Klamath Falls hospital and hs only indication of typhoid is declared to have been a very high fever. Shasta View Mill Will Not Install New Electric Dogs Decision not to install electric dogs this season on Its carriage has heen made by tho Shasta View mill. The present carriage is in adequately braced to carry the ex tra weight and It was decided not to shut down at this time for the Installation, a proceeding which would have been necossary because a new carriage would have to have been made. Censorship Ban Causes Grief to j Pelican Bathers Even in the woods, where men are men and women are darned scarce, the hand of censorsnlp reaches to 'cast a withering blight on whatever people do to pass the time away. For be It known that the boys at the Pelican Hay camps conceived tho Idea of n bathing bench. They didn't have any beach to begin with, nor even now, but they did make a swimming hole by damming up the waters of Bear Creek. All was well. Comes then ono "Doc'' Graham, advising all and sundry that all those, who bullied must at least wear a shirt. No one knows how ho got. the Job of censor and therefore no one knows how 1 he 1b to be demoted, or deflated. Hence the boys am wearing shlrtx and it cramps their style. 10 I AT MIL
