Smokers Found at
Fault in Causing
Two Forest Fires
Smouldering cigarettes and burn
ing pipe heels have both again been
legally proved guilty of causing for
est fires, reports tho U. S. Forest
Service.
Recently two fires were started
on the Chelan National forest in
j Washington. One was along the
I rtd between Ilrewster and Carlton.
It was caused by throwing lighted
cigarettes from a car. The guilty
party was apprehended with suf
ficient evidence for conviction in
Justice Oelssler's court at Brewster.
In addition to the fire and court
costs imposed by state law. the party
was assessed $11.00. the cost of ex
tinguishing the fire.
The other fire was caused by a
sheephcrder on Biitermilk Croek,
who wont into a willow thicket to
cut a pole. While running around
in the thicket he knocked his pipe
from his mouth, spilling the burn
ing tobacco. The fireman on Look
out Mountain reported a fire be
tween the forks of Butermllk. When
the Forest Service trail crew ar
rived .one and one-fourth hours lat
er, they found and S-arre fire. The
sheeplierdev admitted having heen
the cause of it. The judge did the

Illustrative of the fact
'that logging has been too

of Klamath county is the
'fact that in a recent ship-

stances the rot extends from

i to the fact that the timber

j Installation of electric doits next

! Is a possibility, officials of that
concern admitted tills week.
Due to the fact that there yet
remains but a small portion of
Tunning time thla year, the change
I if made, will not be considered un

I said.
Electric dogs hnvo been installed

The electric dog grips at the upper

on the market knows as the Kvans
slacker and unstacker, which pro
vides for the handling of lumber
wbjch is laid on its side for drying.
The Evans device Ib quite expen
sive, however. The great majority
of medium sized mills favor the flat
method of piling and that at any rate
prevents the use of the Evans pat
ent. Three men are ordinarily required
for unloading lumber from kiln cars,
two to handle the lumber itself and
one to handle the stickers. Success
of the device invented by Egan will
do awEv with two men. Only the
stickernta'n will be required and be
can also attend lo the operation of
the unloadcr.
The machine, now under construc
tion, consists of an electric hoist
and a revolving overhead chain, with
lugs. The action of the two Is such
that as each tier Is stripped trim
the top of the load the hoist auto
matically raises the load to the cor
rect level for the next lug to take
hold.
In addition 'to the saving that it
will make, one big feature of the
device is ita small expense. With the
exception of the motor and a few
gears, all purts needed can be sup
plied by the ordinary mill black
smith shop, it is declared.

Vigorous denial that the Topsy

Accordin to these, there has not
been one single case of whooping
cough and only one case in which a
man was suspected of having ty
phoid. The man in question was
taken to a Klamath Falls hospital
and hs only indication of typhoid is
declared to have been a very high

Decision not to install electric

Censorship Ban
Causes Grief to j
Pelican Bathers
Even in the woods, where men
are men and women are darned
scarce, the hand of censorsnlp
reaches to 'cast a withering blight
on whatever people do to pass the
time away. For be It known that
the boys at the Pelican Hay camps
conceived tho Idea of n bathing
bench. They didn't have any beach
to begin with, nor even now, but
they did make a swimming hole by
damming up the waters of Bear
Creek. All was well. Comes then
ono "Doc'' Graham, advising all and
sundry that all those, who bullied
must at least wear a shirt. No one
knows how ho got. the Job of censor
and therefore no one knows how 1
he 1b to be demoted, or deflated.
Hence the boys am wearing shlrtx
and it cramps their style.
