Medford probably will win. Let's go! What started out to be a nice, friendly little baseball game de veloped into something serious to day when the Evening Herald and the Medford Mail-Tribune teams be came deadlocked on the matter of an umpire. The Medford news paper men wanted their foreman to do the guissiug on balls and strikes but the Herald team naturally ob jected. This rift finally was elosed when it was agreed that both teams should have an umpire, and with the strict understanding that Sher iff Hawkins and Chief of Police Loucks would De on hand to curb 1 any attempts at rioting. Besides the several hundred feet of motion pictures which K. B. Murphey proved himself a real booster today when he kicked through with a S10 bill for the streot sign fund. "The game probably will be ter rible," he told a ticket seller." but I'm for street signs first last and all the time, so take this ten-spot and add it to your fund." . The admission price is just 25 cents, and every cent will be used for the civic street sign fund. S ARE FOILED IN MOVE TO IKE ESCAPE Bars in County Prison Are Sawed Through Before Work it Stopped DEPUTIES WATCHING Game of Wits Between She riff Office and Des perate Prisoners A game of wits Is now la prv, gress at the county Jail, a game which Is liable to devefop into seri ous consequences. A group of prisoners who face long terms In the penitentiary If they are convicted are persistent In their efforts to saw their 'way through Iron bars of tho Jail to freedom. They have tried time and again, only to be foiled by tbn sheriff's office, ever watchful. Saws smuggled in From some mysterious source, hack saws are being continually 3 smuggled Into the Jail and last night the prisoners, who are desperate In their attempt to escape, sawed through to iron clamps that held i.conforcemoot Iron bars against one of the windows. The prisoners bad hoped that Jjbu job would be overlooked and that tonight they could complete the Job and effect an escape early tomor row morning via the court house roof. They would have tied blank ets together and slid down from tho roof of the conrt 'house to freedom. It has been done before many tlmee and Is being tried again. But this morning. Deputy Sheriff Jim Hflton. In making his regular ' innp,'Hnn fleleclnd Ihe toh nf fh hack saws. He immediately called a blacksmith to repair the damage and then proceeded to tell the pris oners what would happen when tibe identity of the Prisoners who are trying to escape Is established. The prisoners in a sullen group listened while Hilton told them that when the sheriff's office discovered who the guilty parties were, that they would send them to tAe city jail where they would be locked in solltai.-y confinement In one of tho cells. "I don't know where the hack saws come from," Deputy Hilton said. "But I do know that they are there. We located a set of the saws the other day, but ihave not been able to find the Instruments which were used in this Job last ntght." Sheriff Burt Hawkins has very de cidod views on jail breaking. Ho takes the position that the public must be protected from the iravages of criminals and of prisoners In sist upon owing to get away, they must risk ti'Je chance of getting shot. It is presumed that friends of the : prisoners are helping from the out : side, and that whett they come to i pay a visit slip hack saws to tho I prisoners when nobdy is looking.
