Growing Scarce ,.; PORTLAND, Ore., .June 30. Good nullity' melons 'are 'so scarce on this market that prices have climbed to almost prohibitive lev els. Today fancy ranteloupes are held at 5.25 to 5.50 per standard crato, with pony crates at 4.50 and flats at 2,50. Supplies are limited and prices are 'advancing at the shipping point. Brokers are ask ing V and 5.25 on cars spotted on the local team track during the past twenty four 'hours.. This means that produce firms are forced to handle the melons on a very narrow margin and in some Instances- are ' moved at-cost. The tamo Is true of watermelons. Prices are extremely high at ship ping points and produce firms arc paying approximately 3 3-4 cents tor watermelons laid down hero. They are trying lo. get four cents on the best melons, but find them stow to move at such extreme prices. Extreme, hot weather throughout the country with the. demand ex ceeding the supply Is the principal reason for the skyrocketing market on lemons. The Kixlco, July U-il-4 . .FROM PORTLAND R. G.
