EVENING HERALD, Kt,A.MATH FALLS, OREGON WKDNKDAY. JUNE 17, 192,1 OLSON KAYOS STRAMBO IN TENTH COFFMAN I ' TRIMS ASHLAND BOY TAGE "HVO FollowliiK, n ' mivagu flurry of Mown In tho tenth round, Itocco Btrmulio fln:it "JilKht took the couul ofter havlnKjnnd all the worm of it In every jrouh'd of , Ills fight with Biiimny .(ilson. Froiithen ou Rocco contented hlmx'ipjw'illi making Sammy miss, nn um 'laklnR in which he failed jUHt (it. cnnugli to gel a terrific Jncing. ltocco succeeded in landing a few to tho heart and wind but tlicy had little impression on Olson, who took the offensive tbrotisuout. Rocco gave a good exhibition of gnnieneFa and was out on -his i feet at least onco beforo the final count. His uncanny ability to take them going nwny or-' glancing saved his bacon in the early rounds of the fight. Olson chnnged his tactics last night and proved that he has more than a straight left. Ills right hand was used to good advantage throughout. Tho scml-windup was a whirl' wind throughout. Joe Coffman out boxed Johnny Carlson in every round, showing too much speed for the Ashland boy and carrying the light in every stanza. Coffman was in wonderful con dition and went at top 'speed for the first four rounds but was , visibly tiring in the last two. Carl son was cut and "battered but never in danger, contenting himself with an ironclad defense and with cut ting looso with an oecasional rip ping right. t'offniaii was lot better thun in his last fight, his speed and judgment Improved and a bettor technique throughout reveiillng that in working out for the fight he was under the wing of Krankie Murphy and other old heads ut least part of the time. lie got the decision mid earned it. The six-round event in which Heinle Meyers and 'Maurice Harris of Ashland was a disappointment as far as the decision was concerned but satisfactory otherwise. The boys were awarded a draw, the judges evidently basing their verdict on the fifth round in which Harris had Meyers temporarily in distress. In the first four rounds and in the Fbtth it was Myers' fight all the way. One of Harris' eyes was completely closed and In tho sec ond and in the third ho was glassy-eyed. Myers was the aggressor through out and at all times showed a de sire to wade Into his taller oppon ent and trade punches.1 Ho led con tinually Harris put up- a game ex hibition and deserved credit for stopping -so many and still coming back for more. In the curtain raiser, Joe Wal ters, 1 CO-pounder. substituted for Jack Brush of Dorris and mixed with 190-pound Gunboat Smith of Chico. He mixed tor the first round and then discovered that a 30 pound handicap is not to be. sneezed at, after that showing a disposi tion to take (t easy. The boys were given a draw. Frankie Murphy . Entitled To Be Seen July 4th If the boxing commission wants to please a majority of the cash customers, it will sign Frankie Murphy, up for the July 4th card, which Is now in the making. Mur phy is one of the best light heavy weights in the country, is a draw ing card in many of the big cities, and hasmade a real impression on tlie boxing bugs who have watched him in tho gym since he arrived here a couple of weeks ago. . If Sammy Olson has been prom ised a bout on the next card, let him swap leather with' the New Orleans battler. If the fans are tired of seeing Olson in the ring, they should bring in some heavy weight with a real reputation to battle Murphy. There-is some talk of giving Earl Xlitcbie another tumble on tho next card. The local heavyweight fell before the right hand ot Rocco Slrambo here a couple ot months ago. Olson last night rocked Strambo to sleep. By the process of reduction where dous Ritchie rate a match with Olson?' Ritchlo " is. said to be training faithfully. Ho ji3 reported to be standing up against the big fel lows and trading nlowjMn the gym. On his gymnasium showing alone there is now talk of giving him the headline bout. It would be better for Ritchie and for the game in general to let him start down tho ladder, say in the seml-windup, and prove hiniBelf before being given the top position. Bat it the commission is de termined to put Ritchie on, let him meet Murphy. The tans have seen Olson in three tights. . The 'small house last night showed he is los- i ing out as a drawing card. In the boxing game new faces must be shown if the sport is to be kept alive. Other cities have found that out years ago. ... Murphy Is "a fighter with a na tional reputation. ' He is on - the ground .and willing to box for the regular percentage, without any guarantee. The fans want to see him in action. By signing him up the boxing commission and pro moter will be helping the game and keeping interest alive.
