MONDAY. JUNE IS, 1025 PACE FOtTT? EVENTNCf HERAtoV IttXM.Wn FALLS. ; OREGON' Pelicans Climb Nearer Jo Top by Taking Hard Up-Hill Game From' Dunsmuir at Local Park if -I FJ ''Mi ! 1 Klnmalb Fulls won a frce-hllting. loosely played game (rnm Dunsmuir yesterday, 8 to 7. It was a hard, up-hill fight for tliu Pcllrans from start to finish and kept the crowd ot 1500 rabid fans on thuir toes nlmost continually during the clos ing; Innings of the game. In many respects It was an exhibition of what baseball shouldn't be, but the locals slammed their way to a vic tory and everybody forgot some , ot the ivory ball which was shown during the early singes of the game. The ball and strike umpire was perhaps responsible for the shaken morale of the teams. He took two guesses on every heave the twlrlers threw and he generally guessed 'wrong. The nioundsmcn had to put them over the heart of the plate to got the call, and that, to a large extent, caused the free hitting on both sides. His Majesty, the TJmps, however, erred as much on one stde as the 'other, and made; It a heart-breaking task for the pitchers!: A few of the base ,uv j clsions also were questionable, to say the least. . Willi' their priie hurler, 'Wells. working' in good form. Dunsmuir; started of like a certain winner. . They garnered five runs before the ! locals got started. Three scores in j the 6econd and two moro In the fourth gave them a comfortable! lead. ..'.' ' j The Pelicans scored one In the: fourth, and then started a batting ' drive in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings which drove the famed Mr. Wells to the bench. The; Dunsmuir twirler bb w up com- ' pletely nd let two Pelicans cross : the plate with wild heaves. If the Norris novel is considered an American classic, von 1 Stroheim's screen drawing certainly must be put in the same category. "Greed" gives a stark, naked view ot life; it shows how two hu man beings disintegrate and go to the very dregs, without omitting a detail cf .the downward path. And through all this vigorous film paint ing there runs a wonderful vein of comedy cotndy culled from the rocky ridiculousness of real life. , Actin Is Unuswui ' The "characters ot Norris' imagi nation are vividly present in the picture. McTeague, the hulking, s'.ow-rafndcd animal-man, is por trayed by Gibson GovIand, and no finer piece of work has been done on the screen this year. Trlna, the wife whse lust for old is the chief cause of their downfall, is .realistic ally played by Za Su Pitts. Miss Pitts hereby takes her place on the topmost rung of the acting ladder. oAt the LIBERTY "Don Darp Devil." starring Jack Hoxie and to be shown at the Liberty theater tonight is a vivid, exciting story of a six-foot American cattle man and his Wyoming cowboys cleaning up a band of South Ameri can desperadoes whoso stamping ground is in the mountains of South America. Love and thrills are mix ed in tho proper proportions, the result being an interesting picture play. Action Punch! Red blood! and Comedy! That's the order of tho day down at the Liberty theater Tuesday where the Paramount picture, "Tho Shock Punch," starring Richard Dix, Is the feature. "Tho Shock Punch" Is a screen version of John Monk Saunders' Lib erty Magazine story, adapted for the screen by Luther Reed nnd directed by Paul Sloane, who made "Too Many Kisses," also starring Dix.
