AND HIS TWQ-YEAIS-OLD DAUGH TER SEEMS TO HANDLE SNAKES EASILY ENOUGH, TOO. BERKELEY. alif. June 8. There's, one little girl In' the world whose picnic excursions will never be spoiled by the uninvited guest a snake. r - She's Virginia Leo Schirbach. age 2. Virginia has a doten kinds ot snakes lor pets and playthings. Like all little girls, she likes dolls, but she adores the shlney, graceful and beautifully marked reptiles ' that glide noiselessly about 'her daddy's farm, the queerest farm In America, a snake farm. "Tex" Schubach buys and sells snakes for all purposes. Hunters comb mountains and deserts for new specimenls. Half a hundred Tarieties of. snakes, ranging ffo:r tiny fellows that snuggled in the palm of his hand to huge reptiles, in ' demand by sideshows and cir cuses, stock this queer farm. Ven om is extracted from the big rat tlers and shipped to drug concerns. Schubach is an expert with snakes, but he has a wholesome re spect for the Gila monster, native ot Arizona deserts. .' "The Oila monster is more dead ly than all the rattlesnakes In the world," says "Tex." "Most snakes are barm less and non-poisonous, and with the exception of the ra tlcr, which is "the fighter," will run away if given halt a chance. But little Virginia with a huge bull snake coiled in her arms gives j another turn to the age-old e'mnlty i between man and reptile. When asked wby he taught his children to play with these queer pets, "Tex" replied: "To make picnics more enjoyable!" TREES AS WELL AS LADIES ARE DYED NOWADAYS Peroxide Blond or Henna Veneer and Plywood v1 Can be Grown Colored Woods have long been known, but the recent Introduction . In England of a new method of coloring the wood in living trees will be of considerable interest to veneer, plywood and cabinetwork manufacturers. To obtain this re sult, chemical dyestuffs of special : composition are put around the root of the trees to be colored, espoelally birch or other trees with clearly colored ' and sap-holding wood.1 This niust be done at a time when the sap IS mounting Into the trunk, thus most colorings will be done in, the- spring. The sap car- ' rles the 'coloring matters through out the tree, making tine stripe ef ' fects, as sotaei fibers are more sap holding than others. Green, red or violet are preferred. ' The woods are especially of value In small' cabinetwork or for mak ing panels.; A ', cafe - In Berlin is beautifully finished with green pan els decorated with golden lines. Cigarette boxeB ot red colored wood, as well - as other small articles ot . high life, have recently mado their appearance. Soino excellent results have beeft obtained In coloring ve neer wood, to show ' dark brown fibers beside natural Colored bright fibers. , The colors are not dam aged by drying the wood In plate dryers and by gluing the plywood In hot plate presses. There Is also , the possibility to inject around the roots not Only ono color but sev eral, which then are mixed more or less when raising Into the trunk.
