Dr. Harry I). Torroy, chairman of t lip department of medicine, not expocted to roturn after a year's leave of abuonco. The consolidation of tho depart ment of drama and speech arts with the department of English and tho departure of Fergus Reddio, head of the former- department for sovorni yours, was recommondod by a cow mltteo couslstlng of C. C. Colt and Mrs,. George T- vGorllngor, . both .ot Portland; Sam Kozer, secretary of DIGNITY and simplicity - are ' the basic essentials of the successive small house. Fussy and elaborate details not only detract from the nvpViirpptiiral merit of a house. but needlessly add to its cost. The realization of this fundamental archi tectural principle is slowly being driven home ,to the American people with the result that we are .beginning to see a great improve ment in our domestic architecture. . ' The increased cost of building thai fol lowed the Armistice had at , least one good effect. It . made people give more serious consideration to the materials used in home building and greatly increased the use of the more permanent materials. . People appreciate more than- ever that there is very little difference between the cost of the cheaper materials and the best, especially When the difference is reduced to a percentage of the total investment. . The use of better materials and construction, and the growing appreciation of the good in archi tectural design is adding to the attractive ness of many an American community The house illustrated is a splendid example of the beauty and- substantiality that can . be attained through dignity and simplicity. Second Floor '" Desttsned by Olnf William Shrltrrcn ' Courtesy, American Face Brick Association 1 There is not a meaningless or unnecessary line in the design: The proportion and scale of the house are excellent. ; The door and window openino-s are in per; feet balance and add a note of ijeriness and coziness. The whole, design expressed gen uineness. It is a house of which any true American might well be proud. Both in exterior design and interior ar rangement economy has been carefully con- ; sidered. The straight-aywy roof lines and the absence of all eccentricities in plan elim inate all needless expense in construction. The floor plan arrangement is exception ally compact and convenient. There is no waste space. ' Throughout the rooms are of good size and provided with cross ventilation. Notice the access to the porch from both living and dining rooms, and its ideal loca tion away from the street and facing the garden. The open fireplaces in the living room and in' two of the bedrooms are unusual in a " house of thi3 size and add greatly to its liveableness. - ; ' - It may be of interest to add that this house won a national architectural competition in which more than 350 designs were submitted by architects in all parts of the country. slate and ex-officio m'.cmlier ot tho ll board; Fred Fink of Kug'r.to ami Judge .J.
