Loucks Takes Htand ' Chiof of Police Harry Loucks testified thut Information concern ing the place had been given to him by his patrolmen, and that he gath ered from these . reports that it hadn't been a morally decent piaco. Patrolman. J. K. Cooper said he had soen a lot of drunks wend their way hi to the hotel during the two months he has been on the force, and gathered from his observations that It 'Was a hang-out for drunken people. , Following closely on the heals of this testimony of law violations and imumralltj within the hotel, Attor ney Manning produced 90-year-old W. D. Bailey, grand-father of Mrs. Panos, as the' first witness tor the hotel, ' Just Uke A Church "She runs her hotel like a church," was his interesting testi mony. She testified she was in a California hospital during December and at tho time Mrs, Slavln told of seeing the "fast wom- :n with tho p-ihtted checks and flimsy klmona. Sho testified that at the orders of ex-Chief of Police Powell she compelled a couple of Ind.'nn girls to vacate. Pcwell told her they were undojlrablo, she said. She testified sho also ousted other room era for mis-conduct, Including the un-namad Swede, whose "ut home" to the young Indian girl was a part of the social life of the hostelry. Her Version Her tcstVnony was to the effect that she was awakened late at night by the loud swearing of the Indian girl and- the Swede, who accused the little damsel of taking 35 "bucks" away from him. "I told her she would have to give the man's money back or I would call the polloe," Mrs. Panos testi fied. "The girl told me to go ahead and call the police, and I did." She said that when Patrolman Brown arrived and was told of the money-grabbing Incident, he laugh ed and said It was the Swede's hard luck. Brown testified the girl and the Swede bad both left by the time he and Bordell arrived. A, Nice Girl Concerning the girl who was seen by Deputy Burke, Mrs. Panos was sure the peace officer must be mis taken concerning her character. - ' "She iwas sick and under a physician's care most of the time," she said. "And Bho wasn't a world ly girl at all." ,. .' Sheriff Burt' Hawkins' was called "on the carpet" during the. closing hours of the Inquiry because he had .dared to sign, his name to protest against the hotel license whon as a matter of fact be had- never raided the place; ' The sheriff calmly etplalnod that bis Information had been given to Mm by his -deputies and that they were In the form of official reports and not beresay evidence. He also testified that tbo reputation of the place is not good. ' - Following the cross-examination of the sheriff. City Attorney .Carna- ham said he would hate to be tried as the sheriff had bean as he could toll by the demeanor of the coun cilman that lie would be convicted. He was plainly disgusted with the way the "bearing", was being con ducted and rofused to take, any part in the, examination of the. sheriff. . Deception Charged . But Councilman Roberts accused him of deception bocause be had bas ed his recommendation on the evi dence of his deputies, and Council man Stuckey thought, his evidence was only horesay. ; ; ' I Attorney Manning declared that Cramblott of the public market, had agreed to appear,, although he was not among those present. The at torney said ho had heard reports that -people had threatened to boy cott Cramblett it he dared t3 testify on behalf of the hotel. 1 In justice to Mr, Cramblett, It can be stated that he has publicly announced himself, as a staunch believer- In the prohibition law and strongly opposed to 'twild women."
