Deputy Sheriff J. W. Hilton test!.
I fled that he had gone to the hotel
early this month seeking evidence
In the Pate murder case. He dis
covered that Sim Pate and Hazel
Bentz, a nurse, had bee? registered
together in room 11 on January 1.
He said - he talked to Panos. con
cerning the registration and Panos
had told him he had registered the
pair In the afternoon but wouldn't
let them stay that night because
they didn't have money to pay for It.
Loucks Takes Htand '
Chiof of Police Harry Loucks
testified thut Information concern
ing the place had been given to him
by his patrolmen, and that he gath
ered from these . reports that it
hadn't been a morally decent piaco.
Patrolman. J. K. Cooper said he
had soen a lot of drunks wend their
way hi to the hotel during the two
months he has been on the force,
and gathered from his observations
that It 'Was a hang-out for drunken
people. ,
Following closely on the heals of
this testimony of law violations and
imumralltj within the hotel, Attor
ney Manning produced 90-year-old
W. D. Bailey, grand-father of Mrs.
Panos, as the' first witness tor the
hotel, '

women admitted on cross-examtna
tlon that their hours were from
o'clock or after In tho morning un
til about 4 o'clock In the afternoon.
Mrs. Znchartah, who workod there
until the police .closed thr place up,
sojd Mrs. Panos was a wonderful
wottu-a and Mr. Panos was a perfect
gentleman.
Denies AH Charge
Mrs. Panos made emphatic denial
of all charges lodged against.,, her
place by the peace officers, she as-
lertcd s!ie was trying to operate
clean hotel and wanted to cooperate
with the polfco. She testified she
was in a California hospital during
December and at tho time Mrs,
Slavln told of seeing the "fast wom-
:n with tho p-ihtted checks and
flimsy klmona.
Sho testified that at the orders
of ex-Chief of Police Powell she
compelled a couple of Ind.'nn girls
to vacate. Pcwell told her they
were undojlrablo, she said. She
testified sho also ousted other room
era for mis-conduct, Including the
un-namad Swede, whose "ut home"
to the young Indian girl was a part
of the social life of the hostelry.
Her Version
Her tcstVnony was to the effect
that she was awakened late at night
by the loud swearing of the Indian
girl and- the Swede, who accused the
little damsel of taking 35 "bucks"
away from him.
"I told her she would have to give
the man's money back or I would
call the polloe," Mrs. Panos testi
fied. "The girl told me to go ahead
and call the police, and I did."
She said that when Patrolman
Brown arrived and was told of the
money-grabbing Incident, he laugh
ed and said It was the Swede's hard
luck. Brown testified the girl and
the Swede bad both left by the time
he and Bordell arrived.
A, Nice Girl
Concerning the girl who was seen
by Deputy Burke, Mrs. Panos was
sure the peace officer must be mis
taken concerning her character. - '
"She iwas sick and under a
physician's care most of the time,"
she said. "And Bho wasn't a world
ly girl at all." ,. .'
A .moment later she related am In
stance wherein this same unsophis
ticated young girl had boen hostess
to a number of young men, and that
they jnado so much noise carousing
around she was forced to tell the
nice little girl she would have to
loavo tho hole). .
Telcgranis Explained '
During tho examination of Mrs.
Panos there developed an explana

of their secret sosslon. Thoso tolo
grams were dispatched to the chiefs
of police of Portland, Stockton and
Kacrnmcnto, whore Mrs. Panos has
been operating hotels for a number
of years. " ''"' .
It was plainly evident that tho In
formation on which tho tolegrams
were Bent bad boon given to the
council by ' the woman's attorney,
but the hotel was spared the expense
of producing this evidence through
the kindness and charity of the five
city councilman.
Although each chief of police re
ported different names for the wom
an she's been married before
tbey gave her several bote! ven
tures a clean bill of health.
Like Kangaroo Court
All during the hearing City Attor
ney Carnahan- attempted to observe
at least a aemblanca of legal court
procedure, but be was overruled In
every Instance by the council.
Every bit of evidence favorable to
the bote! was given assldlous men
tal mastication by the city fathers,
bat there were times when the coun
cil were outspoken la tbelr criticism
of the peace officers sa wU as of
the city attorney because he want
ed the "boarrng"- conducted along
orderly llnea. - .'
Sheriff Burt' Hawkins' was called
"on the carpet" during the. closing
hours of the Inquiry because he had
.dared to sign, his name to protest
against the hotel license whon as a
matter of fact be had- never raided
the place; '
The sheriff calmly etplalnod that
bis Information had been given to
Mm by his -deputies and that they
were In the form of official reports
and not beresay evidence. He also
testified that tbo reputation of the
place is not good. ' -
Following the cross-examination
of the sheriff. City Attorney .Carna-
ham said he would hate to be tried
as the sheriff had bean as he could
toll by the demeanor of the coun
cilman that lie would be convicted.
He was plainly disgusted with the
way the "bearing", was being con
ducted and rofused to take, any part
in the, examination of the. sheriff. .
Deception Charged .
But Councilman Roberts accused
him of deception bocause be had bas
ed his recommendation on the evi
dence of his deputies, and Council
man Stuckey thought, his evidence
was only horesay. ; ; ' I
Attorney Manning declared that
Cramblott of the public market, had
agreed to appear,, although he was
not among those present. The at
torney said ho had heard reports
that -people had threatened to boy
cott Cramblett it he dared t3 testify
on behalf of the hotel. 1
In justice to Mr, Cramblett, It
can be stated that he has publicly
announced himself, as a staunch believer-
In the prohibition law and
strongly opposed to 'twild women."
