In line with the recommenda tion made to the college presidents at the recent conference In Washington. by the council of national defease, the University of Oregon, haa adopted the Ihree-ouarter schedule la place of the preseat two semester plaa. The new schedule wtll go lata effect jwlth the opeahu of the university la the fall, aad as a part of the plaa the opening Is set for October 1st, or ap proximately two weeks later thaa usual. The system as adopted by the faculty Is for the period of Om war. The purpose of the chaage, as ex plained by Presldeat Campbell Is to make It possible for mea engaged la such productive vocatloaa as farmtag. which U particularly vital at this time, to complete two-thirds of a college year's work la six moatha aad to de vote the remaining half of the year to directly productive occuaatloaa. The two-eemester plaa does not lead Itself readily to such aa arrangement. The three-quarter plaa, aa adopted, is an adaptation of the system used la the University of Chicago, where it baa been employed for years. The schedule aa adopted Involves the opening of the college year October 1st. The first quarter extends to De cember 21st. The second quarter opens January 2, continuing to March 32, and the spring term extends from April 1st to June 17th. The summer session will continue as at present, oa the basis of half a school quarter. Further details aad schedule of hours and courses will appear la the university catalog soon to be issued.
