UOSKIIUIIG, Ore. The County Court of Douglas County has gono on lecord ns being decidedly In favor of Good Ilonds. In fixing tho annual tax levy for tho year 1909, they pro vided 2.9 mills for rond building purposes, which will provldo tho splendid mini of t'i9,27C,tir for rond building purposes during the present year. In addition to this tho special rond tnxes levied by tho several dis trict of tlio county will bring the total funds to bo expended far rond purposes In this county tu nearly 1107,000. In fixing tho lax levy for the coming year the board has mndo an Increase of but olio mill over tho total levy for last year, yet the Inst year's levy Included only one mill for road purposes, us ugalnst 2.9 mills this year. Last year's general road tax amounted to n little over $23,000. This year It will bo about three times as much. With over 1100,000 thus provided for road building purposes in a sin gle year, tho county court has given Douglas County the biggest boost and the greatest prestige in its history. A complete out tit of modern load building machinery Is to bo purchas ed at an early date and placed in tho hands of competent men for opera tion during tho ontlro season. Thompson and Milton Hale, the three men convicted of burglary, a representative of the Herald visited the prisoners In the county Jail this morning. The men stated that they wished to make a public acknowledg ment of the courteous treatment which they recolvcd while confined In tho Jail which covered a period of about six months. They felt partic ularly grateful to Jailor John Schal lock for the little favors he had shown them during their Ions;, con finement, which had greatly lessened tho tedious hours and made them, be lievo that there wcro still a few men who bad not lost the last spark of ordinary human feollng. They also thanked the Herald for not convict ing them before the Jury had an op portunity to pass upon the merits of the case. Tho men stated that they would not Impose on the paper by asking It to glvo their side of the case as no good could be accomplished. They felt, however, that they had baen convicted without sufficient evidence. Their enemies had accomplished their purpose and they would servo their term. Mr. Melton suted that the on ly reason he could account for betas' brought Into the case waa for person al revenge, the details of which war of a personal nature which k 414 not care to discuss. Tho three men do not show any ot' the effects of long confinemeat, ex cept possibly an improvement lav thehr physical appearance. They are all apparently in tho best ot health and spirits and did not seem to dread the trip which they are to take to Salem tomorrow. The A. O. U.
