At the request of J. D. Melton,
Wm. Thompson and Milton Hale, the
three men convicted of burglary, a
representative of the Herald visited
the prisoners In the county Jail this
morning. The men stated that they
wished to make a public acknowledg
ment of the courteous treatment
which they recolvcd while confined
In tho Jail which covered a period of
about six months. They felt partic
ularly grateful to Jailor John Schal
lock for the little favors he had
shown them during their Ions;, con
finement, which had greatly lessened
tho tedious hours and made them, be
lievo that there wcro still a few men
who bad not lost the last spark of
ordinary human feollng. They also
thanked the Herald for not convict
ing them before the Jury had an op
portunity to pass upon the merits of
the case.
Tho men stated that they would
not Impose on the paper by asking It
to glvo their side of the case as no
good could be accomplished. They
felt, however, that they had baen
convicted without sufficient evidence.
Their enemies had accomplished their
purpose and they would servo their
term. Mr. Melton suted that the on
ly reason he could account for betas'
brought Into the case waa for person
al revenge, the details of which war
of a personal nature which k 414
not care to discuss.
Tho three men do not show any ot'
the effects of long confinemeat, ex
cept possibly an improvement lav thehr
physical appearance. They are all
apparently in tho best ot health and
spirits and did not seem to dread the
trip which they are to take to Salem
tomorrow.
