In February, 1930. was opened recently In County Court. It waa found that tha grand Jury bad apaclal pralaa for Mias Edith Smith, Bight tale phone operator at Westbury, whose "heroic work and alert ness" brought the police and lha ambulanra to the scene when Charles Bauer, Westbury drug- gist, was murdered by three young bandits. Tbs presentment was not opened until tbe three youths had been executed at Sing Sing. Tbe part played by the telephone operator was an Important one. as she succeeded In Interpreting the excited and almost unintelligible message of a caller who passed by the store as the druggist waa slain, and who Immediately made use of the telephone In an efTort to summon tba police, but who was too excited to apeak coherently. MORSE h “CIMARRON” The life of the Committee on Public Relations was not long— it was organ ized by Mr. Hays in 1922, and on March, 19, 1925, Mr. Hays announced that the Committee on Public Rela tions was disbanded. There was every good reason for it proved to be only a high sounding name to impress the public. When Mr. Hays found that the National Congress of Parent Teachers Associations: the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs and other organi zations withdrew because they refused any longer to be represented in such inconsequential work, it was indeed time for him to disband.
