W here, oh where has that part of the constitution gone which gave to us as a fundam ental right, free thought and free speech? Will it ever r e t u r n ’ Nay, it will not, as long as we send such m aterial as J. W. Si to Congress. I move th at Congress appropriate sufficient funds to have an exhaustive analysis made of his brain after his death so th at science may determ ine just what nerve gan glia were affected. I t is hardly w orth while during this season of the year to point out or to talk about abuses which are going on. In vacation time, people's minds as well as their bodies are being given a rest. But an item in the papers in the account of the Mary Pickford ab duction case now going on in Los Angeles should receive at least a word from those who know anything about the third degree. W e are told that it is no longer perm itted in any of police systems. W e are only told that infamous lie. It is a practice that obtains in nearly every jail and police station in the country As long as we place the control of our police systems in the hands of cheap poli ticians, we will have this outrageous abuse going on It is a living re minder of the old Spanish inquisi tion. but instead of the ironscrews and instrum ents of to rtu re of those days, we have the heavy policeman’s shoe, the stron g muscles that can twist and break Oh. we have them — that's the way to secure confes sions! As long as we elect district atto rn ey s on the num ber of convic tions they secure; as long as we rate policemen by the num ber of arrests they make, ju st so long will we have the third degree. Justice for the ac cused! W h y, Justice has been bound and gagged so long by our modern police m ethods that she is totally blind and has lost the pow er of speech.
