Patrick Drown, a native of Ireland, who with others ia enroute to Lake County direct from Cork, underwent an operation laat week in Heno for appendicitis. The Heno Journal Btates that the operation proved nueceasful, although had it been delayed one day it would have moat likely proved fatal. J. P. Everrtt. a brother ot Dr. E. I). Everett of this city, is here from Dei Moines, Iowa, on an extended viait to his brother and family. It was a very pleasant reunion of the bro th jrs, they having not seen eaeh other for eleven years. He ia a painter and decoratur by vocation and may decide to locate permanently in Lakeview. According to tho Alluras Plaindealer in the case of the Fairuort Town and band Co. va J. N. Ford, mention of which was made in latit week's Exam iner, the company aued Mi. Ford for $700 when tho defendants hied a cross complaint alleging damages in the sum of S7000. The jury gave the plaintiffs judgment for $171, and not one-thlrl as was firet reported. Deputy Secretary of State Kozer has completed the apportionment of funds for the counties of the state under the county fair bill paused by the legisla ture. The hill provided for a state levy of one-twentieth of a mill, and with a valuation of 1890,044,164.65 thia trlngs the total appropriation to $44. 532.21. Surprise Valley Kecord : Cleve Wakefield made a trip to Gerlach lart week in his auto to meet and bring back his biother and family, who will ' remain here for a few days and go on to Warner on a visit. He made the trip without accident. J. F. Hanson a few days since re turned from a vit.lt with his family at Los Angeles. He is now getting resdy to engage in farming operations on a large scale on the Point Itanch end al so to commence work on the South , Drews Canal, which it is understood . w ill be completed thia year. Willard Duncan thia week went out to the desert with a load of supplies , for Manuel Saunders' sheep camp, where lambing will commence next week. Mr. Duncan states that range conditions continue ideal and if the : weather continues favorable there will be very little loss of lambs. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Kimball arrived a few days since from Klamath Falls and will remain in Lakeview a month ' or so. Mr. Kimball is in the employ i of the Weyerhaeuser Timber Co., and is ' here to make arrangements with stock ; men for tho use of their lands for graz j ing purposes during the coming Sum mer. The session of the legislature which closed recently has developed the as- j pirations of a number of its members to become republican candidates for j governor. Among these are mentioned I Dan J. Malarkey ot Portland, president of the senate, C. N. McArthur, also of Portland, speaker of the house, and SentBor Joseph C. Smith of Grants Pass. The passenger train crew was called out Sunday to do sumo repair work on the road along the lake, and were un able to get back until 1 o'clock at night. As a consequence they did not get away on their regular run until 9 o'clock Monday morning, owing to the fact that the Interstate Commerce Commission requires all train crews to have at least 8 hours rest between runs. Early Sunday morning a very large flight of brant occurred in this immed iate vioinity. Their squakings aroused many people from their slumbers and caused them to regret that they did not have one or more of the toothsome birds for their Sunday dinner. Another result was that several sportsmen grabbed their guns and struck out for the hunting grounds, but the stiff breeze from the South caused the birds to fly high and out of danger. Swanston & Sun, the Sacramento cattle buyers, have leased the Luke Walker ranch on Snrague Hiver, Klam ath Countv and will ship 600 head of cattle from Sacramento to the ranch. Deputy District Attorney T. S. Farrell and wife, who have been oc cupying a portion of the F. P. Crone miller residence on South Dewey street, have removed to the Seager house in the Sherlock addition. Daniel Boone was up from New Pine t'reek this week after a losd of freight. Mr. Boone states that business con ditions in the State line town are fair and everyone looks for another good season as coon as Spring opens up. C. S. Crosby arrived in Lakeview last week from Klamstn Falls to take the management of the Lakeview Gar age recently purchased by Baldwin & Gordon. Mrs. Crosby will join hur husbund later and they will take up their permanent residence here. Adrianople has fallen to the Bulgar ians after one of the most Btubborn defenses in the history of warfare. This Is taken as the probable closing epoch in the horrible Turkish-Balkan war. The Turkish defender of Adrian ople committed suicide when the city fell into the hands of the Balkans. A social will be held tomorrow even ing under the auspicea of the local en campment order in the l.O.O.F. hall for all meml.ers of the subordinate lodge and their families. This is the second ot a series to be held monthly and it is expected that a large number aflilliated with the orders will be in attendance. Western stockmen will be interested in the opinion handed down by the supreme court of the United States in the case appealed by Fred Light from the circuit court of the Colorado dis trict regarding grazing of cattle. By that decision the owner has no right to turn his cattle upon unfence I land of another for grazing purposes tha land owner having complete protection under the law. W. J. Parmun, who with his brother lately bought the McCulley sheep, is in Lakeview this week from Ft. Bidwell and will attend the convention here Saturday of the local Wool Growers Association. While Mr. Parman re sides in Bidwell he ranges his flocks in Oregon and is much enthused over the organization of a growers association. He reports that his sheep wintered nicely. Jsmes J. Ryan has been appointed to the clerkship m the local U. S. Land Office made vacant by the death ot Floyd I. Barnard. Mr. Ryan is a cousin of Dan Brennan of the Forestry Service, and has been transferred from the War Department, having been on service in the Philippines. The Land Oitice officials have not been advised as to the probable time of Mr. Ryan's arrival, but it will probably be in the near future. Klamatn Northwestern: Judge 11. L. Benson of the Circuit Court was sus tained in tho State supreme court in the case of Arthur C. Lewis vs. Horace Dunlap. This was a case brought in the circuit court in Klamath Kalis with reference to paving charges on Seventh street and Klamath avenue, tne dispute heing whether the purchaser, Mr. Dun lap, or Mr Lewis, who sold the pro perty, was to pay these charges. Judge Benson's decree in favor of Mr. Dun lap ia sustained. J. W. Nelson, of the Anna River Irrigation & Power Co., was in Lake view the first of the week, having nnme down from the company's hold ings in the northern part of the Sum mer Ltike Valley. He states that they have sold considerable land during the winter and settlers are beginning to come into that part ot the county. He will anon open a realty cfllce in Paisley so as to be more conveniently located for handling the company's business. , J. J. Monroe, the Willow Ranch chicken man, was a business visitor this week. Attorney A. K. Wyle and C. E. Crowdcr came up from Alturas Tues day on a brief business visit. F. M. Miller Monday evening return ed from Berkeley, Cal., where he ha been visiting with bis family for a short time Geo. S. Lewis was in from Drews Valley last Saturday and tiled on an additional homestead at the the U. S. Land Office. Klamath County is getting rid of a Urge surplus ot potatoes by shipping them to the flooded districts. '1 he potatoes will be donated free of charge, the railroads providing free transpor tation. In the list of pensions recently grant ed appears the name of Alexander Cameron of New Pine Creek. The pension granted is $30 per month for services rendered as a member of the 22nd Illinois. A washout in the railroad track be tween Willow Ranch and Sugarloaf Mountain delayed the incoming train last Saturday night and it did not reach Lakeview until 3 o'clock in the morn ing. The damage was soon repaired, however, and good time is now being made. An attendant from the Eastern .Ore gon Hospital arrived Monday evening from Pendleton to take Kirk Koontz, who was last week pronounced feeble mindel by the examining physicians, to that inttitut on. The attendant with his patient left Tuesday morning via Koseville, Cal. Guy Nvswaner and Hugo Umbach arrived Monday evening from Keno, where they have been employed for sometime past. They remained only a few days and then went over to Klam ath Falls were they expect to secure employment in one of the big sawmills. Fred Keene and family came down last week from Summer Lake where they -re living on the Marion Barnes desert claim. Mr. Keene has also made filing on a desert claim in that locality and will remain there until be makes proof on the land. They will return the latter part of the week. James Handley, who for the past month has been taking treatment at the Mineral Springs bath below town left last week to join bis brother, Tom, in Richmond, Cal. Mr. Handley was considered to be in a serious condition j when he begun the treatment but was i greatly improved when leaving here. W. F. Maitland last week while i ttansfernng some sheep dip from a 'can to a bottle accidently got some of the contents in one eye which for time caused very serious injury to tne mem ber. He was compelled to wear a Bandage over the eye for a few days but now nearly all inflamation has left the afflicted part. The old adage "If March comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb" was trulv exemplified last month. The last day was typically Springtied, but a sudden change was seen on All Fools Day which bad every indication of Winters' return. The weather remains warm, however, and aside from an oc oassiaonel light Hury of the beautiful in all it is quite pleasant. O. Laurgaard of Salem has been ap pointed by Governor West as project engineer for the Columbia Southern Project, for which the legislature ap propriated $450,000 for its reclamation. A tentative agreement was also reach ed whereby the money for the prelim inary work is to come from the Desert Land Fund, and is to be paid when the appropriation for the project becomes available. Last Saturday a baby girly was born in this city to Mr. and Mrs. Tom Que, but the little one survived birth only a short time and its spirit departed for the happy world. Tom is among the first citizens of the local Chinese colony and last year went to the land of his birth and wooed and won a briue. Re turning to this country a tew months since he experienced considerable troutle in landing with his wife, but was finally successful and thereupon returned to Lakeview. Woodcock & Leonard have just in stalled a power plant in connection with their blacksmith and wagon shop. In addition to operating the blowers by power, they have several emery wheels used for different purposes, be sides drills and the like, and w ill soon Install a band saw for use in the wood working department. Other machinery will be installed aa needed, and they will thus be enabled to turn out a much larger amount of work, but will do it much more expeditiously than baa been possible heretofore. 1 ALGER LAND COMPANY O.
