Miss Jennie Maxwell has leen en gaged to teach the Warner Lake school. The term commenced September 10th. Miss Klla Callahan has U-en engaged to teach the primary department of the Paisley school, hut school will not ojen for three weeks. L. N. Chicquette, a teacher who has been in this vicinity since the late tire, has been engaged to teach the Cogswell Creek school, and began his duties last Monday. Mr. Chicquette is from Wis consin. Prof, and Mrs.E. I). Poill, two popular tducators of Eugene, Lane county, will teach the two departments of the public school at Silver I-ake. Mrs. Poill was, up to September 2d, Miss Estelle U y land, the charming daughter of one of Iane county's highly respected families. On that date Mr. Poill claimed her as hid bride, and they will commence life in "double harness" in Lake county's educational held. Mr. Smith has taken a partner in his milling business in the person of Hi Barnes, who is known as a first-class miller. Schminck, the hardware man, has a large new stock of hardware. The irrepressible as well as irrespon sible Hong Siiig, who left Lakeview soon alter tiie lire, has purchased a China restaurant at Alturas. Dr. E. B. Ramsby and Miss Dolly Woodcock returned Tuesday from Klam ath county. They recently v;sited Crater Lake with the Lakeview party. Miss Eva Amick has gone to her home at New Pine Creek, after clerking for several months for J. S. Field. Miss Amick will probably attend school in Alturas this winter. W. M. Harvey returned Saturday from Portland.Jacksonville, Ashland and other tow ns on the railroad. Mr. Harvey left his daughter, Josie, at the listers' school in Jacksonville, and says he had an en joyable trip. Miss Minnie Hopkins sails for the Philippines on the 15th inst. She has received from General Shafter the assur ance of an appointment as teacher in one of the government schools in Man ila at a salary of f75 per month, with free passage to the Islands. The fireplugs for the city water works have been placed in position, one at the corner of the Daly drug store, one at the corner of Reynolds' store, one at the corner of G. II. Ayres & Co.'s store and one on Main street, at the corner of S. F, Ahlstrom'a saddlery. George Newkirk, in company with C. O. Metzker and an Examiner represent ative, visited the West Side of Goose Lake last Saturday. Mr. Newkirk is just from Madera ".ountv. Cal., and came especially to locate in Goose Lake val ley. His object in visiting the West Side was to examine the property of Mrs. J. Aviragnette, on Drew's creek. He found the place suitable for his pur pose and has since purchased it through Beach, M -Carrey & Metzker, of the Lake County Real Estate Agency. Mr. Newkirk will improve his place, which consists of 1G0 acres, and will pay par ticular attention to raising vegetables and poultry for the market. The West Side is now in a more flour ishing condition than ever before. Most of the farmers have arranged rabbit tight fences to prevent depredations from these pests in the future. Their crops this year were over average. The Bernard & Edwards thresher was at work on a crop of wheat, barley and rye at John Harvey's ranch last week, and the yield was very good. Thresh ing on the West Side was completed Monday. Road Supervisor William Pherson of the West Side district has been doing some good work there this year. The grades have been made easy traveling. Fall and winter dress goods just re ceived at Bailey & Massingill's. Smith returned from Portland and other points last Saturday, after an absence of nearly two months, during which time he visited the principal towns between Portland and Ashland. "Prof." Smith is representing the Equitable Life Insurance Company, and wrote con siderable insurance since leaving here. He will remain here a iew weeks. Lemon fc Hartzog are now in business at New Pine Creek, having purchased the Ben Warner stock and store bni'd ing and removed their stock from the Davis Creek store. They now have a large stock of general merchandise, and open up at the State line town under most favorable auspices. Tom Colvin and Stanley McLaughlin were up from New Pine Creek last Tues day. Mr. and Mrs. Colvin will return to Lincoln, Cal., to spend the winter. The mild winter climate at Lincoln he finds conducive to his good health.
